i have 1x7800gt and 1 x1900xtx card. Since i can sell the x1900xtx, buy 1x7800gt and have some left over cash, that's why I ask this question. Any input is appreciated

I went from two volt-modded 7800GTs to one oced X1900XT and I didn't notice much difference. It's much nicer running one card if the performance is the same as an equivalently priced SLI/Crossfire setup. I would keep the X1900XTX if I were you.

You are trying to make some money or get a decent system. You could sell the two cards combined for roughly $220 on ebay (not including shipping) and pick up an 8800GT, it will probably cost you a little cash in the process (I'm guessing about $40) but your performance would go up alot...and you got rid of some old cards!

well, the things is someone told me that i would not be able to take full advantage of the new card unless i upgrade which i don't really want at this point. The system is:

DFI SLI ultra-d
Opteron 165 running @2.9ghz
2x1gb crucial ballistix pc4000 ram
2x36 raptors in raid 0
x1900xtx with minor o/c

The only thing you "might" have to upgrade, is your power supply. A good quality 425W would be good. Depends on what you have now of course. At almost a 3GHz, your Opteron system should be more than enough and be able to take full advantage of a 8800GT.

That 'someone' is a dolt. x2 at 2.9ghz is more than enough.

I think the stock GT may actually consume less power than an overclocked XTX...

I bet it does. Those 1900xt's were real pigs...nothing really compared to them at the time though.

And yeah, a lot of people put more emphasis on the processor for gaming then they should IMO. These days its all about the video card, especially with the high resolution LCD monitors everyone's running.

Edit: And its not like an "overkill" graphics card would cause the rest of your system to melt down, even if you were running a single core sempron...you just wouldn't get quite as much out of it. But a faster graphics card is a faster card, any way you slice it.

Yup, I upgraded my X1800XT to a 8800GTX in my old 939 4200+ X2 system and the upgrade did wonders for it. Only in very CPU limited apps (mainly UE2.5 games) i saw little performance increases. FEAR, GRAW2 and Oblivion flew.

If you can sell those cards and buy a 8800GT it will inject a lot of life into your system.

no kidding... a x2 2x1mb cache operton at 2.9ghz is not going to be any kind of real bottleneck unless you gaming at cpu limtiing resolutions like 1024x768/1280x1024. Its not as fast as a c2d at 2.9ghz but it aint slow.

i just upgraded my x2 3800 @2.7 ghz to a x2 4800 @2.9 so i could add dual core to my secondary gamer box. now i'm just waiing for the dust to settle in the ~$200 price range. I want to see what AMD/ATI has to offer with their 38xx line.

so far it looks like a $200 8800GT OC version around Black Friday may get my money..

so if I play game at 1280x1024 then the cpu is limiting

It would be cpu limited in some games, but it'll be a lot less than your videocard. For your system, a GPU upgrade would be most beneficial. 8800GT is what I would get if you can sell both cards.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't put more money into older cards at this point (especially a three-generation old 7800GT). This benchmark shows how the 8800GT outperforms cards from just one generation back (7950GT & x1950xtx) let alone three (7800GT->7900GT->7950GT).

Your best bet is sell both cards and bump up to either an 8800gt (256 or 512) or a 3850/3870 depending on those cards' pricing and performance.

Black Friday may be a very interesting day this year. I haven't bothered to go out early for the last couple but may this time around.

As others have said, the extra 7800GT is a bad idea. I went from two 500mhz 7800GTs to an X1900XTX at one point (got fed up with the SLI bugs) and found them to trade places depending on the game, but recent games are all very shader heavy and the XTX will have a substantial lead in those. Your CPU is fine though.

Yeah, considerably less I would think. A stock XTX takes about the same power as the 90nm 8800GTX.
