So we have a Cisco DPC3000 through Charter but it is being problematic, we have 100MB pipe but I see it cap at 25 with something plugged directly in to the modem.

What would be a decent upgrade to this modem? I'm open to whatever but I'd like to keep cost around $50-75.

Most cable providers provide a list of modems they'll support if you buy your own. I'd locate that list first and that will help narrow your options. The Motorola/Arris stuff is generally pretty good.

I was looking at the SB modems. The 6121 is $10 at walmart but that seems to be a lateral move for what I want to do. The valid modems per Charter are these for all tiers of speed.

I'm not sure what Charter is doing post-merger, but I know TWC was essentially halving the available speeds from what the modems are capable of doing. If you have 100Mbps service, you will want to get at least an 8 channel downstream modem, 16 or higher would be better, just in case things change.

If your currently renting the modem from Charter, call them and say you need it upgraded

You don't need an upgrade, you need your ISP to fix their stuff. The 3000 and the 6121 are both 4x channel modems, which means they support up to 160 Mbps download.

There's possibly something wrong with the modem (in which case a 6121 is an adequate replacement), but it's more likely your ISP screwed something up, or their circuits are just overloaded and you're getting your guaranteed "up to" 100mbps.

Hopefully OP doesn't mind me co-opting his thread, but are there any cable modems out there that DON'T have overheating issues or latency due to the Intel Puma chipset? All I want is a modem I can set and forget for 50-100 speeds and that Comcast won't EOL in a year or two.
