worthwhile CPU upgrade?

Hi all,

Been very happy with my i5 2500k for a few years now, OC'ed to 4.4ghz, but I've now got a second HD 7950 on its way to me and I'm wondering whether its worth it to upgrade to an i7 in order to better feed the crossfire setup. I'm running a single 1440p display and play mostly bf4, company of heroes 2, planet side 2, and a few other similarly GPU intense titles. Does anyone else have a similar setup, or has anyone made a similar upgrade? My display will OC to 100 hz, and I'm more interested in higher framrates than mega high details, so a CPU bottleneck does seem like a possibility to me.

Thanks, charlie

I'd say that an i7 would help with bf4 for sure, but not so much for the others you mention. Also I would assume you mean going to a 2600K. I think it might be a move worth considering if not just to remove a variable from the system, few would say an ODed 2600K or 2700K could not drive two 7950s. Besides, you should be able to get some money for the 2500K, so it's actually like about a $100 upgrade.

At 2560x1440 almost everything is GPU limited something fierce, and on top of that SB and newer i5's are all basically top-tier gaming CPUs.

I suspect you won't get much value out of a CPU upgrade until DDR4 and SATA express.

Didn't notice the res, but he does say he turns down the quality and wants fps, so it's kinda unclear at that point if the CPU gets into play, I bet that in bf4 it would.

EDIT:

Basing my suppositions on the CPU graph about halfway down this page, which in turn comes from gamegpu.ru:

Don't forget that he's running is 2500K at 4.4GHz, which an i7 4770K is unlikely to reach on the same cooling. I'd say that upgrading to a 4770K and overclocking it would probably get him 0-10% improvement (not worthwhile IMHO).

Oh, I'm talking 2600K, not a platform upgrade. I think there is something to be gained in some games by this, but it really is debatable.

Definitely not worth a platform upgrade at this time, imo.

Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply, been away for a while. Just to clarify I was only ever interested in getting a 2600k or 3770k as I know the platform upgrade isn't worth the cost. I actually managed to find a 2600k on eBay for £150 on eBay which is a great bargain, so I bought it anyways. I figured I'll see which one is the better overclocker and sell the other as I could probably get at least £130 for the i5. Thanks for all the advice, it was genuinely helpful even if it seems like I ignored it!

Ouch!! An upgrade from a 2500K to 2600K is worth maybe £20-30 at most. You made a mistake paying £150 for a marginal side-grade. I hope that you can sell off your old chip for a decent price.
