Yep, A function generator is a sophisticated signal generator capable of producing many different waveforms.
 
Yeah, it doesn't really have to do specifically with digital logic. It is just a piece of hardware that outputs a periodic waveform. You can adjust things like the frequency, amplitude, symmetry, offset... etc.

It is usually periodic, but also can be programmable (i.e. lookup-table) or random (white noise).
