Even I wouldn't upgrade a Core 2 in 2016, low end Skylakes murder them. Add H110 or H170 and you are set.
Last night, I removed a new Dell 3847 LGA1150 motherboard and replaced it with a Dell 560 LGA775, figuring out I can save an additional $75. It has AHCI, but no UEFI.

Is there some sort of underground competition, for whomever can build the cheapest PC? Why would you replace a UEFI 1150 mobo with a non-UEFI 775 board? The pre-installed OS probably won't even boot on the older board.

Edit: Or do you run a desktop PC parts chop-shop? Someone comes in looking for a shiny new 1150 PC, and they walk out with a re-formatted Dell with a 775 mobo? And the 1150 mobo / CPU gets sold on ebay? Because you've alluded to doing such things in the past (buying i7-4790 rigs new at Costco, and selling the CPUs, and replacing them with lesser ones), and I could never quite figure out the why.

He has some kind of fetish for hardware depreciation and always tries to stay ahead of it. It seems like a waste of time to me. He should just buy a Pentium 4 and stop buying more hardware, P4's are basically paperweights now.

It's a Windows 7 Home Premium OS that was already non-UEFI installed by Dell for LGA1150. The Inspiron 560 LGA775 board automatically sets it to RAID mode, even with one hard drive only. Boots fine and perfect, no re-formatting is needed. I only need to reinstall the graphics. I also get to keep Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Windows 8.1 and 10 don't work, I know.

I can get a Core 2 Duo for same price as Pentium 4 now.

Build them into your desk:

That's pretty cool. At a recycling place I work, I would take old computer's CPUs and take them home.

Why?

Because I want to collect many chips as possible and make a sort of home computer museum with descriptions below each chip. And it would be encapsulated with transparent resin and put under glass for viewing.

:)
