Worth waiting for x1800xt 512 MB?

To come back in stock, or should I go ahead and buy a 256 MB x1800xt? I can get the x1800xt for around $209.00, and the 256 MB version for about 5 bucks less.

Does 512 MB ram really make a difference in games at the moment?
 
Are you nuts, thinking about it for 5$???

Anyway, 512mb will make some amount of difference and may make significant difference in some games.

If it helps, the 512mb version may be pretty close to a 1900XT most of the time.
 
yes. i had both, and the 512 was superior in several games i directly compared. not a significant advantage in every game, but certainly enough to warrant the small difference in price.

Wasen't sure if the 512's were that much faster than the 256 versions.
 
If it's going to be back in stock i'd wait and spend that extra. But i'd make sure that it is going to be back in stock. I really doubt they are still in production.
 
@ high resolutions the 512mb one is superior, but @ lower ones it prolly wont make a diff. Oblivion is one game though that even @ lower resolutions it benefits from the extra vid ram. btw where are u buying it from?
 
the x1800 series cores wne tout of production a long time ago. the only reason there are still any for sale is because ATI is trying to dump the rest of its stock. the only x1800xt 512mb that it still for sale from a reatiler that I am aware of at a reasonable price is the x1800gto2 whihc is already unlocked to x1800xt out of the box and overclocks like a beast.

Yeah, the online retailer with the cards told me they would have some in at the begining of this week. They never came up for sale, and my back in stock notifier never came on. Don't know if they are jerking my chain making me wait for nothing.

Yea esically with the mods.

My 7900GT's in SLI can hadel Oblivion just fine even at 1680x1050. However dump some LOD mods (like going to 1024x1024 hi-res textures) really makes the memory usage skyrocket. It can hadel the distance LOD mods just not everything else.

512mb of vram (according to the X1900XT 256/512 comparison) can make up to a 20% difference (Black and White 2??). But most of the time it's under 10%.
 
I might just wait till I get my check for teaching night classes, and get me an x1900xt. I've struggled for the longest time trying to make my mind up on the x1800xt and x1900gt. Looking up info on new games, how shader intensive and etc. DX10 is around the corner though, and I hate blowing 200-300 bucks on a card that won't be able to see all the bells and whistles of games that come out 6 months from now.

I got my Mobo, and PSU in the box still burning a hole in the floor. I'm ready for some F.E.A.R, and Oblivion! 🙂 My FX5900xt got me through Doom 3 and Quake 4. FEAR and Oblivion eat it alive though.

Don't expect an instant revolution with DX10. First phase of DX10 hardware probably won't be worth the cost, and Crysis looks to be the only DX10 game due out in the next 6 months. Save your money and get a nice DX9 card to hold you over ... if you can really get a X1800XT 512MB for $200 don't pass it up.

All those special effects were done on DX9. (which goes to show you that DX9 wasn't fully realised yet)
DX10 will probably just make it perform better and make it easier for developers to do those kinds of effects.
 
I'd save the extra hundred for X1900XT 512MB, make sure you grab it before ATI can phase it out over the next few months.
