I contemplating whether upgrading my dad's computer is worth it. It's from 2005..which may be a sign to scrap it right there. Here are the specs:

2.2 ghz celeron
512 & 256 MB DDR 133
40 gb hd

The MB can take up to 2 gig memory is what I'm thinking, but will that at all help? This thing pretty slow right now and speed is what I'm trying to gain...

Thanks & appreciate all input.

If it's too slow for whatever he does, it's probably not worth upgrading. You're much better off just building him a new budget machine.

If all he uses the computer is to surf the Internet, go to the FS/FT forum and see if you can get some more DDR RAM for cheap. Also, try a clean-install of Windows XP or even Linux and see how the computer responds.

I agree. You might also look into a modern hard drive.

I would reinstall the OS before adding or replacing any hardware if you haven't yet.

Replace the 256 Mb stick with a 1 gig stick if you can find one cheap enough.

A 1 Ghz single core and enough memory will satisfy most users assuming the software is correctly configured on a clean install.

If it really is ~2Ghz CPU, then if you can add 2Gig RAM cheap, and get a decent ~$50 new fast HD, then I say go for it.

2GHz CPU is more then enough for email and internet, as long as you have enough RAM and a decent HD.

Re-install XP so it's a clean install, and it should be fine. You just need to see what kind of RAM it takes, and how much $$ it is now.
