Worth Upgrading?

Here's my current system:

Athlon XP 2400+
768mb DDR RAM
ATI 9800 Pro
WD Raptor 10,000 73gig

I'm thinking my CPU is a big bottleneck in my gaming right now. I'm contemplating upgrading to an AMD 64+ processor and new motherboard. Is it worth it? If you do think I should upgrade, which chip & motherboard should I get?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Both your cpu and your videocard are bottlenecks.

See if you can overclock the XP2400+.

How much do you want to spend? I dont want to recommend getting 6800GT for you since your cpu is a bit slow.

If I was you, I'd sell your cpu, motherboard and videocard and get socket 939 nforce 4 when it comes out (this gives you time to sell your current setup) and 6600PCIe. Then later you can just upgrade to a faster PCIe videocard.

A64 3000+ 90nm @ 2.4ghz will be a decent upgrade also but wont solve your frame rate issue in latest games as the videocard is a major driver for doom3, hl2, far cry etc.

CPU could be a slight bottleneck here, but I will tell you if you gots the dough to upgrade, then AMD64 you should go! Winchester core: doesnt matter what speed you get (save money and buy the 3000+) for they all OC very very well!! For mobo I like ASUS, but its individual preference. Asus A8V is not a great overclocker, but is fast and stable. I like stability, but if you are a diehard oc'er then MSI or GIGABYTE is prob the way to go. Nvidia chipsets oc well. Just remember you MUST get GOOD memory!
