Worth upgrading from ipod mini to Nano 2nd Gen?

No. You don't really get anything new, unless you need the flash memory (if you move around a lot, like exercising/running). I'm still chugging along with a first gen Mini.

That would be my only reason...

But then again, with that line of thinking, I'd just wait until the Ipod Mini broke before replacing it.

You mean when the battery fails?

...or any other part...

color screen, faster browsing, very good battery life, gadget show got 26hours out of the thing. it definetly is an improvement. so it depends on your budget.

I splurged and went for the 8 gig 2nd gen black nano.

What a waste of $$$$

Agreed. I can't believe people are willing to pay upwards of $250/$300 or even $500 for something that is meant to play low quality music.

From an iPod Mini to a 2nd gen Nano: Yes
From a 1st gen Nano to 2nd gen: No
From a 4G U2 iPod to an updated 5G U2 iPod: Yes (hehe, buying one from amazon.com soon 🙂)

Instead of the 8GB iPod Nano2.0, I would get the 30GB iPod Video5.5. Seriously, nearly 4 times the capacity.

I had a 4gb nano and upgraded to the 8gb one, and I still think it's worth it. It's pretty durable, waaayyy more scratch resistant than 1st gen. Now I just need to sell my old one.

I have an 8GB nano and I absolutely love it. Sold my 5G 30GB video iPod in the process. Having the Nike+ kit is worth having a nano to me...

Nike+ kit? What is that exactly?

It's a little module that you plug into your nano and it tracks your workout for you. It will calculate how far you run, how long, and from that, average mph. You can upload your workout for free to your computer and it allows you to have a visual representation (speed vs time) graph. It also allows you to compete with other runners. At any time during your workout you can press the center button on the nano and some woman's voice tells you how long you've been running and how far you've gone.

It is fairly accurate, but I am really short and it always overestimates how far I run. If I was a bit taller it would be better. There is a way to change the setting to compensate but I have been too lazy.

That said, it's pretty cool for $30, but if I were to seriously splurge on something for this purpose I would buy one of those nice watches that tells you all the above + heart rate.

Sounds pretty cool

Well I received the nano and I honestly believe the upgrade was worthwhile. I like the form factor a lot better in comparison to the mini, the battery life is great, and the music sounds better as well. The color screen is an added bonus too. It's made out of the same materials as the mini, which is good considering my mini held up well over the past couple years. Overall, I'm happy with my choice.
