WORTH UPGRADING AN X800XL TO A 7800GT?

I currently have an x800xl @ stock w/ a VF-700 alcu @ 7v its dead silent and gives good performance, but for BF2 and Serious Sam 2 its kinda slowing me down and i can't crank up the AA would you think it's worth upgrading to a 7800GT for ~ 300ish? or just stick w/ what I have?

assuming you are playing @ 1280x1024, you should be able to play bf2 fine if you lower texture quality to medium and aa to 4. the visual differences are very little.

not sure about seriou sam though.

at this point i wouldn't upgrade, maybe wait a bit longer so the 7800gts come down.

that is a good price, but i still don't think there would be much of a difference unless the res was higher at least with bf2, not sure about serious sam 2....

Factor in the cost of selling what you have, whatever you think you can get for an X800XL and then the upgrade to a 7800GT would look a lot sweeter. Personally i wouldnt bother but i dont game as much as i used to.

Well I play battlefield2 at 1280X1024 on my 9800pro with 2X AA so... Only difference is the fact I'm using Medium textures instead of high so that's probably what you should do as well. Look on this site or firingsquad's site for guides on "optimizing" for battlefield 2. There are some things you can disable/lower in battlefield 2 to help improve frame rates with out changing the picture too much.

I have a 21" CRT so I'm trying to go at 1600x1200 and in BF2 and SS2 the X800XL just isn't cuting it w/ AA anyways I guess i could sell the X800 and make the cost a bit lower that seems like a better buy in that case 🙂 hrm guess it just depends on how much I can get for my X800XL these are the only 2 games i have issues with everything else that i play runs fine, my specs are in my sig fyi 🙂 medium doesn't look that diff in BF2 your correct mostly I'm trying to improve my SS2 playing exp for some reason its just dog slow @ 1600x1200 w/ 2x AA and 8x AF

2 GB of PC3200 Cas 2 3 2 7 memory 🙂 2x 1gb also have some leftover CH5 but since I'm runing a winchester 3200+ @ 2.4ghz w/ a divider I figured I'm ok w/ just the 2gb instead of 3 w/ 4 dimms

bf2+1600x1200=bad fps

look at the article in my sig - bf2 ram usage, under the area where did some stuff with bf2sf on my rig, 1600x1200 fps = ~16 🙁

to play that high you need 7800gt/x

You should be able to play 1600x1200 med settings no AA/AF with good frames.

I dont agree with that ram usage for bf2 I run 1280x1024 at 6X AA frames are at 60's at time they drop to around 30.

"As PC games have evolved, the need for more high-end hardware has become apparent. Battlefield 2 pushes the envelope even further by being one of the first, First Person Shooters that requires much more than 1GB of RAM for any resolution over 1280x960 with all high settings and 4+AA."

edit: my settings target changed to 1280x1024.

wow look at this:
http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/7800gt%20miniroundup_12020511252/10117.png

how is that posssible no AA/AF and its only 18 frames better than the X800XL.

if you can get a good deal out of your x800xl, go for it. youll notice a pretty big diff in performance, i recently did the same upgrade you are considering. youre overall gameing experience should improve 🙂

Just an FYI here is the rig does anyone have any exp w/ Serious Sam 2? BF2 I actauly don't play as much 🙂 lol based on everyones suggestions I think I've got BF2 ok, just drop the AA and play at medium settings and I should prolly be ok with what I've got w/ SS 2 its choppy at 1600x1200 in some areas w/ just 8x AF and no AA I wonder if Cat 5.13 would help 🙂 still using 5.11 I'm still kinda up in the air if its a big enough jump to get a 7800GT vs my X800XL for just basicly one game and possibly better settings in bf2

upgrading to the 7800gt would give you the upgrade option of sli in the future, when more advanced games come out, and 7800gts are cheaper than they are now

I beg to differ, I run BF 2 @ 1680x1050 max detail no aa (or med tex 4x aa) at ~40-50 avg FPS with a AXP 3200+, 2GB OCZ, and 6800GT@ultra. With a 7800GT you can run max detail, aa, AF and avg VERY high FPS at 1600x1200 unless you are in a laggy server.

He said to play that high end you need a 7800GT/x and I was disagreeing saying that my 6800GT could do that.

when i did the test@ 1600x1200 all settings were high, except dynamic shadow and light and aa was 6. as i noted it was on a bf2sf map, but i was the only 1 on the map and still 15fps.

what map did you test on? also were you using fraps? i would like to compare on the same map that you did, or if this was on all the maps and also what patch, 1.03 or 1.12 because my tests were done with, which 1.12 seems like it kind of needs more power.

our rigs are in the same age bracket. xp3200 vs p42.8@ 3.0, atix800xtpe vs 6800gt @ultra. the only difference is you have an extra 1GB.

I think he ment no AA and meduim settings. Hi and meduim settings are barely a difference the image quality isnt notiable and you performance is bettter.I read it in a guide it also said turn off shadows but i think that runs the realism.

maybe it has to do with ati, but when i have dynamic shadows on, they look bad, very jaggy even with 6AA

If you looked at recent benchmarks, the whole Ati 1k series is performing very bad in SS2. don't know if its a game issue or a driver issue. So the upgrade would be ideal in that game. As for BF2, there difference isn't as big at all so you'll probably have to tweak your settings to fix that. Trying lowing to 4xAF and maybe adjust some of the texture settings. Look at the advice from other posters and on the net for tweaking BF2 performance. And instead of trying to use 16x12 2xaa why won't u try 1280 with 4xaa?
