$100 cheaper sounds like a good reason to me, an additional 256mb of vram over the 570 doesn't hurt either.

You'd probably get a better gpu than what they released as, since those are gone and Nvidia was able to seemingly improve the process.

Fun fact: 480s draw less power in furmark than 580s.

How about a link when you post a graph? That way we can look up the conditions the measurements were taken under. Looking at the addy for the graph, it's fudzilla. They, and the other rumor sites, are not considered reliable by most of the members here.

I haven't seen anything from the OP indicating power concerns.

Power/heat are easily manageable, and a 480 will cream a 5850 in modern titles, especially those that feature tessellation.

I don't know if AMD ever fixed their CF issues with 5xxx series, but my 470s @ 900 core are considerably faster than 5850 CF @ 1000 core in Heaven with normal tess, they're 43% faster @ 1080p.

If it is a big concern, unscrew a light bulb and stop worrying about it.

Stick the lightbuld in your case doing nothing but generating heat. Excessive power draw is not a good thing no matter how you try and spin it. I'm really looking forward to the reviews to see if Kepler has honestly got power use under control. The GF110 was helped dramatically by software, not because is was in any way efficient.

So the considerable performance increase is "nothing".

We're not talking about a $300 card vs a $500 card anymore, time to come back to reality.

All that said, I guess we can disregard all the overclocked 7970 performance numbers... I mean since in your words it's excessive power draw is not a good thing no matter how you try and spin it.

I wouldn't upgrade to a GTX 480 from my 5850.

My 5850 is nearly silent during gaming and still very capable. Tesselation isn't really a big enough deal to spend whatever it would be to upgrade.

Not worth the performance gain.

What the heck are you talking bout? What does an O/C'd 7970 (or any 7970) have to do with this thread? It's very difficult having a discussion with you. You jump around so much.

When the 480 was first released it was debatable whether it's shortcomings justified any additional performance it gave. It's 2 years and later there is no debate, there are other options that are better.

On that same token, what does kepler have to do with anything in this thread?

Your narrow vision into the world isn't shared by everyone, conclusions drawn from it need to be weighed against that fact before you go off on these sort of tirades.

My narrow vision and tirades?

I'm hoping that Kepler will be an actual improvement rather than just a bigger hotter chip that runs ~10% faster. Other than not wanting to inflame those who bought GF100 cards I could say exactly what I think of them. It would serve no real purpose.

The GTX480 is a furnace that sounds like a jet turbine. There’s no good reason to get one with the GTX570 being available.

Let's just say that I more or less agree with this.

Let's try logic.

~10%

Performance wise 480 = 570, both are clocked around 700MHz factory, both have 480 Cuda cores.

480 is ~29% faster

43101.png

480 is ~29% faster

43104.png

480 is ~50% faster

43110.png

480 is ~27% faster

43113.png

480 is ~135% faster

480 is ~60% faster

It seems your information center is stuck in a loop dating back to 2010, I believe it's time for you to update that database.

So outside of batman, and 4x MSAA on BF3, a 5850 is either fine for games or its slow and even a gtx570 is too slow to play.

it's not worth an upgrade, when you consider 5850s OC to reach 5870 + 15% performance, on a card he already has, don't need to put up with excessive noise/heat. Why fork out $200?

Srly, do your perf comparison vs 5870 + 15%.

Just wait for gk104 and see how it goes. Otherwise a 7870 would be the best perf/$ upgrade, as even a big OC it uses ~150W.

A 480 is not the same as a 570 anymore than your 470's are the same as a 560ti 448. The 480 is no better of a card today than it was when it was released in 2010. Newer more modern designs are the better way to go. If he wanted to buy a 5850 today I would recommend against it as well. He should hang on a little longer and buy something that's not 2 gens out of date before he even gets it. There's a reason the 480 isn't included in any of those graphs. Anandtech has updated their information center database since 2010.

I'm not going to keep on with you. This is a thread where someone asked advice. He didn't ask for you to lobby ad nausium your pro GF100 stance in yet another thread.

Good because to be honest I didn't want to spend the next year trying to correct every misconception you have about GF100. You clearly are bias beyond repair, continue to talk down on it as if it was the worst thing ever.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Yeah and 480's overclock 15% too. Extra 500 MB of VRAM as well

570's may be better on power/noise, but they have less VRAM and the boards arent as high quality as the 480's limiting their OC potential.
