Worth reading the entire Dune book series?

The first is one of the best books ever written. The next 2 are quite good, and the rest aren't that great.

nerp,

So, does this mean the Dune series is bad or you don't prefer it? Did you read all 6?

It was just an asshat comment. I know this is ATOT where everyone only reads sci fi and comic books. Dune is an interesting book, but hardly literary. I feel like I need to be the lone voice to say read Dune and then read other books. Spending all that time to read 6 dune books is a travesty with all the tremendous fiction out there that will actually inspire you. I read dune and liked it. But on my deathbed, I'm not going to be reflecting on Dune, but you bet your ass I'm going to be remembering passages from Mailer. 🙂

Yeah...the first one is amazing. The rest are not so amazing. You can read them if you're a big Dune fan, but honestly I struggled through the last one (and I'm a HUGE fan of the first one).

Ditto.

The first one was good and the next couple were entertaining then I found that they went downhill. Well honestly I think I gave up after maybe the fifth one.

Yeah, why not. I liked them. The last one was cool. Too bad he died before he got a chance to continue the series.

I didn't like the books once Paul was no longer in the picture the first time i read through them. After watching the sci-fi mini-series i reread all of the books and loved every one.

Ah, the success of the US education system. I'm pretty sure he's referring to Norman Mailer.

I read all fifteen Dune books (including those written by his son Brian and Kevin Anderson.) And I liked them all.

They both were giggling over my name when I met them, since I share the same first name as one of their main characters.

Because what is important in this world isn't determined by you?

Is that the test these days? Someone isn't important if some random internet tool hasn't heard of him? 😕

What's interesting and funny to me is that mailer's work is influential enough that he's probably read and watched things that are based on stories he's written or at least influenced heavily by him without realizing it.

Dune is great but after the first book it quickly becomes weirder and more philosophical. After the first 3 the story basically goes far into the future and that changes the setting quite a bit. I loved god emperor, heretics... not so much. I haven't read chapterhouse yet so I can't comment on that one.
