Worth putting a 2500K to work?

Hi all, I'm planning to replace my 2500K rig with a Haswell 4770K rig next month. I'll have all the parts to an extra crunching machine. Is a 2500K with no graphics card going to be good enough to add?

It depends on what project you want to work on, but generally, yes, it's very worthwhile. Especially if you overclock!

If I can't sell my H80 for a good price, I'm going to keep it overclocked. If I sell it, I'll be back to stock cooling.

Probably WCG btw. I think it might be time to retire the Q6600. I'm going to measure its power consumption, but I think that it may be too high for the summer time.

Unless you're doing HCC, everything else on WCG requires a CPU. (HCC on the CPU isn't worth it IMHO.)

Ken, iirc you know a lot about DC. Is it okay to keep the computer in a hot room? It stays reasonably cool but certain days ambient will be in the 90s.

The ambient gets to the high 90's for my 1100T and it runs fine. I don't have it overclocked in the summer.

Be sure to keep the fans dust-free and if the cpu gets hot, replace the TIM with IC Diamond.

Mostly it depends on the person and their economic situation. Everybody is different!

Many crunchers are still running some pretty old rigs as they cannot afford new computers.

And we don't want to make them feel like they shouldn't be crunching because they don't have the newest computers.

I am still running a Core 2 Duo with a GTX275 ... well, at least until the weather warms up and I don't need it as a heater (it was below freezing this morning!) 🙂

Agreed with Gleem. My Q9550 and 1055T still crank out some decent PPD despite being 3-4 years old. A 2500K will definitely make a great showing in most, if not all, DC projects.
