Hello,

I bought an Athlon 3000+ last year with the intention of building a new PC. However I never got around to it and am only now looking to put something together (after stumbling across the cpu in my desk drawer) . My 3000+ is still in the box and I was thinking about buying something a bit faster- perhaps a 3500+ or 3700+

Reading through the foums to get an idea of how much of a speed increase i might get in gaming- it seems like it might be better to OC my 3000+ and invest the extra dollars in my new video card.

As I understand it (reading through AT forums), I have a week 17, E3 Athlon 64 which are reasonably good overclockers(stepping below).

ADA3000AA4BP
LBBLE 0517EPMW
Z644008E510ZZ

I know OC is never guaranteed- but do i have a reasonable chance of getting this up to 3500+ performance? If not i'll sell it before I open the box.

(assume that I will have a good mobo, Psu, cooler etc as i will be buying all of these new)

That's a terrible stepping. PM me so I can take it off your hands.

:(

That is an excellent stepping and I predict no problems for you to get up to 2.5Ghz at least. I'd expect 300x9

I think you are smart to want to keep that cpu and put the saved $ into the video card. I agree with imhungry that you should get 2.5 GHz + easily.

Yeah you can expect more than 2.5 Ghz! I'd expect 2.8 at the very least. My 3000+ Venice 0517APJW did 2.9 Ghz on air and 3 Ghz on water.

0517EPMW is known as one of the best venice steppings... so start clocking, and don't stop until it's maxed out.

Guarantee 2.25GHz with any decent MB. Should top out around 2.4-2.5GHz will excellent stability. 1M Super Pi time around 36 seconds. KEEP the CPU.

that is not only the best possible week, but the **MW codes are the best chips from that week as well. I haven't seen one yet that didn't do 2.8 easy. Man that is a nice find, lol, unbelievable.

Looks like everyone has this one under control. Keep the processor and overclock. Spend the money on a video card. Just like everyone else said. Oh and get a DFI motherboard. ;-)
