Worth it to upgrade x800xl to x850xt PE for 12x10 LCD?

I can probably sell my x800xl on ebay for the $200 it would cost to get a GTO2 that could overclock to 850XT PE.... Is it even worth it?

I don't personally think you'll notice much of a 'real world' difference. 10fps for example is very difficult to notice in real world terms, but it on benchmark graphs it looks 'huge'.

The GTO2 IS an X850XT. It simply can't be called that because ATI sold the R480 chips as excess inventory. In fact, some GTO2s apparently have 16-pipes enabled by default even without BIOS flashing as AT Price Guide has indicated.

IMO, it IS worth it if you can sell you XL for $200 because an X850XT is roughly 10% faster than the XL across the board though an XL clocked at 450/1200 would probably close to gap by 6-7% if not entirely. This goes to show that the XL is more efficient than the X850XT (which is about 30% faster clock wise but only 10% faster performance-wise)

yeah, maybe i'll just try to overclock my x800xl a little bit instead of the hassle of posting the listing on ebay etc., etc.....

What happens when you O/C the X850XT? Doesn't it get to where the X850XT PE is (which is pretty darn good and close to the 7800GT in some games).

You could probably overclock the GTO2 to 570/1180 but you won't get much out of it. Maybe a 4 or 5% increase in most games . . . 600/1280 or 650/1400 is more significant but probably not reacheable without a third-party cooler and volt mod.

Like I said, it is probably WORTH IT, that is, if you manage to actually sell the X800XL for $200. But that's easier said then done and probably not worth the effort unless you MUST have an extra 5-10% boost in your FPS which truth to tell is far less important than high FPS during intense parts of the game.

And yes a highly overclocked X850XT would come close to an 7800GT but only at lower resolutions. At higher res. and higher AA/AF, it falls behind significantly. Also let's not look too much at "average FPS" as the 7800GT is undoubtly providing smoother framerates even if it doesn't "average" that much higher than an OC X850XT.

$200 for a used 800XL? I just bought a new one for $265. I needed AGP and didn't need the extra horses of an XT since I only have an AMD 3000+.

I know that I was shopping for that card and I would not have paid anywhere near that.
