Worth it to part out newly-built server, sell HDs for $$$?

Just wondering. I put together a server over a year or two, with six Hitachi 2TB 7200RPM drives, and four Hitachi 2TB 5400RPM drives. I also have two of the 7200s, and one of the 5400s spare.

Seeing as how those 7200 2TB Hitachis go for $230 on Newegg, and I paid $110 + tax, would it be worth selling them off now, and then re-buying more HDs later this year (or bigger HDs, 4TB Hitachi drives are on the market now)?

May have been worth it a few months ago when prices were even higher, but not today.

+1

two-three months ago for sure, now, not worth it (unless looking to off load excess to upgrade with, doing it for the money is a waste of time).

Anyone worth anything ever buy a used HDD? for retail price? I don't think so.

Well, I haven't actually put the server into production. The only thing that has happened to the drives, is doing a SMART short self-test, long self-test (internal surface scan), followed by an NTFS full format (write zero), and then checking the SMART data for re-allocated sectors.

Then I put the drives into the server, created the filesystem on like two of them, and one of them had parity calculated onto it. (unRAID server free).

Then I unplugged the server and put it away, until I could afford to purchase two "Pro" licenses for unRAID server.

Edit: I was also thinking about just selling off my spares. Still have two 7200RPM 2TB Hitachi drives BNIB, retail-boxed. (Newegg sells bare drives, so mine would be worth more.)

Unless you are planing on selling via a business that normally deals with HDD, the drives will be seen as secondhand as the original warranty will not be a full one. I do not think you will find a buyer that will take the "just tested" drives and pay full retail for them.

Definitely make sense.
And that's the way to do business.
Never hurt to try, but not to put price near the retail price.
