got a qx6700 extreme and 8800 ultra superclocked, i have 28 days left to activate windows xp LOL. is it worth it to buy vista ultimate or whatever edition comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit. crysis needs vista for dx10 and bioshock and some others. so would it be worth it, i dont really play any old games, only steam games, warcraft 3, and new games comming out now. would i see lower fps in all games with my setup in vista compared to now in xp? that is my worry

I would say its very much worth it. It looks very nice and with Crysis coming out soon and Bioshock out now, you might as well get Vista to utilize those games. Just make sure you have at least 2 gb of ram and you're good to go :)

Nothing you are going to notice, those are all source games, they will run with 100fps on a ultra and a qaudcore with 2gb of ram.

i got one more question. i was looking at www.tigerdirect.ca. there are so many freaking versions of vista. I read crysis benefits from 64 bit vista (64 bit instructions), so i might pick that. But which 64 bit do i get, so many different versions of vista. Also isnt 64 bit vista like filled with driver issues in source games and relatively new games out now compared to 32 bit vista? I am not that rich so whats the best version/future proof/ cheapest version of vista i should buy for GAMING.

Vista Ultimate x64 retail.

That's what i've run quite happily for half a year now.

And yes, 97.69% of games will run just marvelously.

Most people will have no benefit from the extra features in Ultimate. Just get the Premium IMO.

Yeah premium should do. I got Ultimate too, for free, but I'm not using anything that isn't in Home.

I've been using the same, since April now and have had absolutely no problems.

It's all about the RAM with Vista. Your CPU and video card are only secondary considerations. Make sure to have 2-3gb of it.

With a Quad Core Extreme and an 8800 Ultra, it doesn't sound like you skimp on price, so you might as well just get x64 Ultimate.

That's exactly why i suggested Ultimate.

Somehow it fits better with that system ;)

will the 64bit cause any problems with anything else?

I would recommend the 32bit for now just for maximum compatibility.

64 bit will be fine unless you need some design or business applications that do not yet work with 64 bit OS. I sincerely doubt you are one of these people and 64 bit support is improving a lot.

I would go with 64bit Ultimate. But don't get retail, go with OEM if you want to save money. Retail is really a waste.

Team Fortress 2 plays at > 100FPS with my 8800 and an e6600 at 3.0 GHz. Bioshock does > 60 FPS. Don't worry about Vista's impact if you buy good components like you're doing.

buy home premium and a couple more gigs for RAM. Vista is a GREAT OS. The people that bash it either have ancient hardware or just dont like MS.
