Worth going from E6300 to E8400?

Or anything else? Of course I would have to get a new motherboard. The E6300 is @2.8ghz. Would I still be able to use my PC6400 memory and o/c?

I think it is depending on how long you had your 6300, staying with my 965-DQ6 will find out on Wednesday if is a go or not. The highest i had my 6300 was at 2.93 but didn't keep it there all the time.

I'll be getting my 8400 on tuesday.. and selling the 6300. I didn't overclock it at all.

I had thought about getting rid of my E6300...as a matter of fact, I went ahead & purchased an E2180 because of the higher multiplier & the success stories of overclocking. I also went & purchased a new motherboard (MSI P35 Neo2-FR) after a SATA connector came off my IP35-E.
I decided to give my E6300 one more chance at overclocking & I guess i'll keep it now.
I have it up to 3.009 so far (430x7) at stock voltage & temps ~47c full load.
Perhaps the 2180 would do more, but I guess i'll send it back.

Your 965 will work..... Just update the BIOS even 975x will run a Wolfdale.
Get a good heatsink and it would be a good upgrade 3.6 - 3.8 is easy.

My aim however is the get the Q9450.

Yup. I just picked up the Xeon 3110 (E8400 equivalent) for my Abit AW9D with latest BIOS, but I'm waiting for the Q9450's for my rigs that will hopefully have a P5E3 Premium and Asus Striker II Extreme in them....

But yeah, my Abit is going from my E6400 (in sig) to an E8400... an update...

Why? I understand Penryn CPUs are nice, cool, and much more efficient but still, the locked multiplier of only 6-8 really kills my interest.

I've seen beta bioses for that board that run an e8400. I actually used to own that with a conroe in it, and sold it to buy an abit ip35e because i heard there would be no support for wolfdale. Literally 48 hours later, I found a bios for penryn support on my board. Mine was revision 3.3, mind you.

edit: I agree with krnmastersgt's comment on q9300/q9450 overclocking.

Yeah, those 0.5 multipliers knocked the quad-core line-up down a notch. :x But if we're only talking quads the Q9450 will outperform the Q6600, even if marginally, while running cooler and consuming less power. The jump in price from $275 to what's bound to be $330~350 is a bit much but when they come down to $315 at least it will hurt less.

I had exact same spec as yours. I now have e8400 and MSI board

I think upgrade was worth the money.

Doesn't turn me off though. When I think about have a quad running faster than my current dual...it kind of a no-brainer.

I had an e6600, which I sold on ebay for $147. I bought the e8400 for $216. Otherwise, I wouldn't say it was worth it.

If you actually need the performance, then an E8400 @ 4GHz would be quite a large jump over an E6300 @ 2.8GHz. A stock E8400 would only be slightly faster, but it's only fair to compare overclocked CPUs.
