Worth going from 2x1GB DDR400 to 2x1GB DDR500?

So I have an opportunity to sell my current set of 2x1GB OCZ platinum DDR400 (2-3-2-5)and replace it with 2x1GB OCZ platinum DDR500 (I think it is 3-3-2-8).

The rest of my system:

4400+ s939
A8N SLi Platinum
MSI 7800GTX

My processor is able to do 250fsb x 11 (2.75ghz) with no difficulty, so I can take advantage of the DDR500, but I don't really envision myself buying a new heatsink or a water system and shooting for 2.9 or higher. However, I don't have an AC in my office, so i will have to run at stock settings when the weather is hot.

It seems like the high performance DDR memory kits are becoming very hard to find since the introduction of AM2, so I kinda feel like i can either buy this memory now or just live with what i have (which is pretty damn good!) until i replace this system in 2 years or so.

I CAN sell my old memory, so the marginal cost is about $40 for the upgrade. Is having memory that can go 1:1 with fsb up to 250mhz worth the higher latencies? also, does anyone have any experience with that particular set of OCZ DDR500, or have any suggestions for another brand?

thanks!

I would likely personally do it, but that's only because i like OCing so much i constantly waste money on things i don't need 😀

Is it worth it? No.

thanks for the responses!

I was figuring that at least SOME people would support the upgrade, given that it is only a marginal cost of $50, but it seems clear that i should just stick with what i have...

no, i wouldnt think its worth it, unless you need a higher overclocks (and even then, overclocking isnt guaranteed).

though i went from 2x256MB DDR500 to 2x1GB DDR500...god, that was a hell of a difference. no more stuttering at ALL.

Well one problem with your upgrade OP is that you will be going from 2GB to 1GB. If you're going to upgrade to DDR500 modules, get two of them at least.. I'd say the performance difference between 400 and 500 will be noticeable, my DDR500 2GB memory modules should be arriving later this week and I'll be doing testing anyways to see how big of a difference there is.

I've got some PDP XBLK but it's 512x2. Anyway, the OCZ 400 platinum doesn't overclock? These PDPs and the OCZ EL Plat Rev2 I just sold have both been shown to overclock over DDR600 (AT had the PDP at 630 and the OCZ TCCD at 636).

If you can, try overclocking the OCZ400.

Try using mem divider 333, is your CPU goes higher, get the new RAM if it can do 400 or up divider, else forget abouti it

Plus or minus a few percentage points in 3dmark and maybe a couple of FPS in the latest 3D game. In otherwords it not worth it. A64 is not bandwidth starved and doesnt need the extra bandwidth, additionally the extra latency DDR500 will probably hurt more than it will help, possibly even negating the benefits of the extra bandwidth.

You already have 2GB of ram the current sweet spot, no need to get new ram IMO.
