Worth going for 6800 instead of trusty 9800Pro?

Helping a friend of mine to make a new rig. It it wort going with a base nVidia 6800 over a ATi 9800 Pro?
Basically a 9800Pro ~$200 from Newegg and the 6800 (w/ dual DVI) is $270.

I am not sure what games he will run.

A 6600GT is a better comparison. It costs just slightly over a 9800 Pro and is noticeably faster in many cases, and just as fast in most other cases. The 6800 will be faster than either, but whether it's worth the $70 more is your call, or your friend's call.

70 dollars?
You can get a 6600GT AGP for $222 and a 6800NU for $253. I would spend a little more and get the 6800NU.. Its better than the 6600GT and if you can softmod it it will be even better.

I was using his figures of 200 for the 9800Pro and 270 for the 6800. The 6800 that you linked to doesn't have dual DVI that he listed.

OK thanks. The 6800 it is.

I'm staying with my 9700Pro. hopefully it still holds up for some 1600 x 1200 gaming when the 2001FP comes in.

I don't run any games at 1600x1200 on my 9700 pro, even older games... But I can tell you now that no new game will run that high. Card is 2-3 years old now.

I'm not running Doom 3 or HL2. I'm sticking with MOH series and occational BF1942. I'll get a new card if I need to.

OK I have a 9800 Pr oI just put in a new computer and unfortunately it is "old" technology. I would definitely get a 6800. For the price difference I think it is definitely worth it.

You will be fine. A 9700 Pro might run a tad slower, but my 9800 Pro runs HL2 @ 1600 x 1200 with no problems.

D3 and Far Cry will likely be a bit slow, but anything else will be fine @ 1600 x 1200.

What processor are you building the system around?

If you get a 9800 Pro, I certainly wouldn't get one new; the prices are high for the 8-pipe 256-bit ones. However, a used 9800 Pro can be a great buy, even when compared to the 6800; you can probably find one on Ebay in the $150 range or maybe even less. This is coming from someone who just switched from a 9700 to the 6800. Yes, the 6800 is faster...but unless you play a lot of Doom 3, it may not be worth it.

I will say that if you end up deciding between the 6600GT and the 6800NU, that if you're going AGP, the 6800 wins no contest, the 6600GT costs within 10-20 bucks, and has four less pipelines.

What 9800pro, and what clock & mem speeds? My 128/256 9800pro at 396/349 won't even run it at 12x10 with full eye candy & 4aa/8af.

Anyway, both cards have a similar price performance ratio and are good choices, though the 6800nu is a bit more future-proof and possibly moddable to 16 pipelines, I'd say it depends what your friend wants to spend.

Doom 3 does not take as much power as ppl think. My 9800 Pro 128MB 256 bit runs doom 3 at 1024X768 ultra settings, 16x af, at around 50 fps, and i could kick in 4XAA at the same time and still be in the mid 40s easy.

Mine didn't do that well... no AA, AF, 40fps solid at 1024 medium detail.

but it was easily playable and looked fine (when you could see)

Speaking of AF, I see everyone specifying a certain level of it in Doom 3. I don't recall seeing an option in the advanced config tab allowing a choice. I recall the one for AA. Is AF controlled in the game or in the nVidia control panel?

My 9800 Pro runs @ 420/360 (720), and @ 1600 x 1200, I don't use AA...seems kinda silly. Why are you running AA @ 1600 x 1200...it really makes almost no difference at such a high res. Also, I've noticed no noticable difference in visuals when I drop AF down, and even disable it. I keep all setting in HL2 @ max however.

You should try it without AA and lower AF.

A64 3500. He's getting everything new. I told him to get the 6800, it looks like the best choice.

I agree, I was running everything max at 16x12 and 4xaa, 8x as, I switched them to 2x aa, 4xas, then completely off and noticed no difference. Maybe I am just blind, but at 16x12, it all looks pretty..
