Worth getting firewire?

Still pondering on whether or not it's worth to spend the extra $10 and get a Firewire enclosure over a USB 2.0 one...I'll be moving files pretty often (alot of the times big ones) mmm...any opinions?

firewire is faaar faster. since you transfer a lot of files, i really recommend the extra $10 for the firewire enclosure.
 
Firewire is far faster than USB2. If you have firewire support on your computer then it's best to get firewire for the hard drive.

I don't know the speeds but a google search for someone not quite as lazy as myself will find it.

Try transfering files between USB 'vs' Firewire and you can see it. At least from my experience. If you transfer files or videos you'll be able to tell in a heartbeat. There's a real world difference in speeds as far as I know.
 
Main question do you already have firewire support or will you be buying a card for it. If you have to purchase a card i would say no if you already have it then go for it. Some companys have dual use enclosures that will run either firewire or USB.. That would be my way to go. Then you can use it anywhere any time.

I'd suggest firewire real world its faster than most USB enclosures and even if theyre even the usb2 has far more overhead
 
Get firewire, for sure if you're getting an enclosure. USB might be okay for a webcam or MP3 player, but firewire is the way to do it if you're moving lots of data.
 
Look into getting a dual USB 2.0 and Firewire. Most people dont have a Firewire connection, so as a backup if you have to transfer files to another computer, it is imperative that you have USB 2.0
 
i have 3 firewire ports and installed them over 2 years ago. i still haven't used it once 😛. if your external drive supports it though, go for it
 
I thought usb 2.0 was faster than firewire? but i rember knowing that firewire was slower than usb 1.0-1.1

It is if you look at the specification, but USB was designed to run keyboards and mice, not do file transfers or DV streaming. That's what firewire was designed for.

1. USB 2.0 is much slower than FireWire 400 and 800. Apple states that the USB 2.0 ports on their Macs support transfer rates up to 480 megaBITS per second (Mbps), which translates to 60 megaBYTES per second (MB/s). The most we saw was 144 megaBITS per second or 18 megaBYTES per second.

Think about it. FireWire 400 is rated at 400 megaBITS per second (50 megaBYTES per second) -- 80 megaBITS slower rating than USB 2.0 -- yet when exact same drive/enclosure is plugged into the FireWire 400 port, it goes almost twice as fast!

You can't blame it on the drive, because, as you can see from the FireWire 800 tests, the drive is capable of transfer rates much higher. Some blame it on Apple's USB 2.0 drivers or the USB 2.0 bridge chips. I can't comment on that."

Good products yes, good prices...mmm...idk I've checked their stock and nothing decent looking with firewire under $40...
