Worth getting a 360? (Already have PC, Wii, PS3)

We are looking to buy a new laptop, and Microsoft is giving away a free Xbox 360 4GB when you buy certain laptops, which is enticing. However, I have a gaming PC and we already have both a PS3 and a Wii. So I am wondering if adding the Xbox would be nice to round out the collection, or if it will just end up being overkill/rarely played.

It will really come down to 360 exclusives, and Kinect. (I do not plan to spring for Xbox Live.) My wife and 3 year old really like Just Dance 2 on the Wii. But before I spend more money on Wii games, I thought I should wait to see if we ever get Kinect.

What can you all offer me in regards to:

1) The top 3 to 4 Xbox 360 exclusives that are epic games worth playing.
2) Playing Kinect with only 10 feet of space between the TV and the couch.
3) Must-play Kinect games, specifically dance games or kids games, and their appeal over Wii equivalents.

Thanks.

id do the deal anyway and just sell the xbox if you don't want it

use it to offset the cost of a more expensive laptop if that matters

Yeah, that's good advice, but what I'm really trying to decide is if I should shell out the extra money to buy a Kinect or not.

If it was a matter of buying the Xbox (plus the Kinect) I wouldn't be doing it at all. But this free deal changes things. If my family would have more fun playing with a Kinect than the Wii for some games, and there are some epic games I'd have fun playing, then it's worth it. Just trying to get peoples' opinion on those aspects.

Crackdown 1 was a lot of fun.

Red Dead Redemption is supposed to be decent but I haven't played it.

Most of the other games on it I've played on a PC instead (Mass Effect 1-2, Dragon Age, Oblivion, etc.)

I haven't picked up a kinect so I don't know if there are any good games for it.

It really depends. I think 2 consoles plus a PC are enough. Because you can get what you want between the 3 of them. The rest is overkill/gluttony for sure, lol. While you are not missing anything per se I believe that the 360 is best for 1st person shooters. If that is your thing, you won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't. My gaming PC has been down for about 5 months and I've been just fine catching up on all the 360 games I stockpiled but never played. Fear 2, Singularity, Dead Space, Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, Bioshock 2 - all look and play awesome on the 50" Plasma...I don't remember exactly what the exclusives are. As others have said, I would just get it and then research a bit more. Then you have the option or can just turn it over anyway if you decide not to keep it.

^ I'd agree it has the largest online community for the multi-player FPS of the month. It's also the platform of choice for online sports games.

For single-player if you have a good PC the graphics and screen resolution will usually be much better since most xbox (and PS3) FPS are rendered at 640 - 720 pixels and then upscaled to 1080. You'll generally also get lower quality textures, turned-down settings for fog, shadows, other effects, and a lower draw distance.

NO

At one point not long ago I had a Wii, PS3, PC and 360. The Wii was a complete waste of money, hated it. sold it.

The 360 was great in 2005-2007. MS has ditched most of it's 1st party devs and the days of exclusive 3rd party have left them behind (Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc.). Your best bet is a gaming PC (Steam) + PS3. The PS3 has free online like the PC, great exclusives and Netflix/BD playback.

The 360 is still charging for peer-to-peer multi-player, which is a complete joke unless you are some kid who grew up in the Xbox era and is completely brainwashed into thinking this is normal.

PS the Kinect is a joke and is the only thing pushing 360 sales. Lots of non-gamers love hand holding devices.

I have all 3 consoles and a gaming PC and I use the 360 95% of the time for my gaming needs. Im not saying the ps3 or wii suck, its just that I had the 360 longer than both. If I had a ps3 first I may feel different but in you case you probably are not missing out on anything as some of the better games are on 360 and ps3. Unless you like the fable series I dont think ms has anything better over sony. I dont dig the exclusives that are on each system lately as I think console gaming has been dumbed down so low it really doesnt matter anymore.

What games? Remember that the OP already has a PC, wii and PS3 so they'd be getting a 360 for 360 exclusives.

Pretty much any.

I prefer the 360's controller, specifically for racing and shooter games.
Also, despite it's "zomG it costs teh muny!" subscription for Live Gold, I'll gladly pay for it for the vastly better online experience over PSN.

The 360's exclusives aren't as big a deal as they were two or three years ago, but Forza, Gears, Halo series, etc are must-plays, and several lesser known, older games like Lost Odyssey or Alan Wake are great too.

It seems to me that Xbox is best for first person shooters (better frame rates, better online and some exclusives) and Playstation is better for platformers and also has some exclusives.

IMO it pretty much comes down to which controller you prefer. I do think the Xbox controller is a bit more comfortable.

Ten feet front-to-back should be fine for Kinect, but if you want two people at once, you're going to have to consider your side-to-side space.

The dance games for Kinect are fun, and if you keep your eye out, you can find a good deal on the Kinect and games.

EDIT:

For Kinect, and really any motion game... don't forget the ceiling height and any obstructions (ceiling fans) as well.

I'm mostly thinking of the dance games for Kinect and stuff like Kinectimals for my 3 year-old. I've also always wanted to play Gears of War and I'm sure there are some other exclusives that would be fun.

I have realized, though, that with the Kinect as an add-on costing $140 it would be dumb to buy it separately. Or another way to say it is it would be $40 worth of laziness. You can buy the 4GB plus Kinect bundle for only $100 more than the bare 4GB one is worth. So I'll be selling it. With PS3 price cuts, it's likely we'll see some price cuts from MS in the coming months too, so...

I would take the free 360 and buy a Kinect from a store with a permissive return policy. If you love it, keep it. If not, return the Kinect and sell the 360; either way you win. The Kinect is the only reason to buy a 360 anymore. There are almost no exclusives for the console. You've got Halo, Gears, and Forza. And a few random games here and there like Alan Wake.

The Kinect holds absolutely no appeal for me so I can't really talk about it. It looks stupid and not-fun to me but again, that's just my opinion and my usage would differ greatly from yours. For starters, I don't have a kid 🙂.

Since you have a PS3 and a gaming PC, I don't see why a 360 would be useful at all. Again, virtually every big game that comes out is on multiple platforms, and the number of new 360 exclusives is teeny-tiny. The PS3 has free online, better and more universal accessories, more exclusives, and is a far superior media center device if that matters.

If Kinect really interests you, get it. Otherwise, you already have a gaming PC. The 360 doesn't have too many titles that aren't or won't become available on PC.

Alan Wake! & Forza 3! are my pics

I've never played with the kinect 🙁

Other nominees are DEAD SPACE 1 & 2 / Mass effect 1 & 2 both can be on xbox and pc.

Or if no XBOX360 games interest you, I would suggest selling it to recup some loss.

I simply cannot believe that only one person in this thread has mentioned the Halo series!!! While my enthusiasm for the series has admittedly waned with each release, I still love every game and can't wait for Halo 4.

The Gears series really never did anything for me. If you enjoy Stephen King novels at all, then Alan Wake is simply a must-play. Not sure if non-thriller/mystery novel lovers like the game that much though...

I just can't get into any of the Xbox exclusives. I'm trying to go through Gears again now and it's a struggle. I anticipated Alan Wake for years only to be severely let down due to repetition. Loved the story but just couldn't take it and finally got rid of it about halfway through the game.

This is coming from someone who has 2x 360s and 2x PS3s (slickdeals... damnit!)... I'd bypass the 360 unless you're into online fps/sports and/or want Kinect.

Have 2 gaming pcs, a Wii, PS3 and 360 ( along with my last gen and retro consoles ) and I don't regret having my 360. I had my PS3 first. There are enough exclusives and ports to ps3 that are lackluster (lost planet 1, assasins creed) that you could easily have 30+ games for each console and not regret it once.

Kinect is ... well ... flawed. If you get a kinect cheap, use it as the ingame mic, and do video chats then like dance central then its a great buy. Make sure your game area can really get your money's worth out of it.
