Here's my top ten, in no particular order.

1. High Rise Condo Apartments - Seriously, you're paying $200k+ for long term use of floor space. What do you actually own? Buy a house or rent instead.

2. Lottery tickets - self explanitory. Odds of winning 1 in 13 million, or something like that.

3. Diamonds - Some people are saying diamond jewlery is overvalued. Now that they can basically create them in labs, I believe them.

4. Premium Gas - Chances are your car doesn't need it.

5. Snow Tires - I've driven up hills covered in ice with all-seasons. Unless you like in a place where roads don't get plowed, you probably don't need them.

6. Vague Charities - I know the cancer society earmarks money for cancer research. I don't know what exactly WWF does. Activism? Not helping animals. No thanks. Why would I give you money?

7. HDMI Cables - If you pay more than $10 for a standard 6ft HDMI cable, you're an idiot.

8. Extended Warranties - Useless 99% of the time.

9. The Government - I still don't know what they do with it besides hire more civil servants at rediculous wages.

10. Interest - someone else said it above. Don't get yourself into debt.

1) Agree
2) Agree
3) Depends on what you get out of buying the diamonds :p
4) Maybe
5) Disagree; I will never drive another winter without snow tires.
6) Agree
7) Monoprice FTW!
8) Super agree
9) Agree (tax FTL)
10) Agree; stupid credit cards...

This thread asks "is it wasteful?" I'm sure many of us spend money on crap that isn't needed. Alcohol and entertainment junk would rank way up there.

Anything that I freely choose to spend money on can't be on a "worst thing to spend money on" list.

Anything that I have to spend money on such as rent, utilities, health care, etc also cant be on a "worst thing to spend money on" list.

That leaves...

Tickets, unexpected car/house repairs -- thats all I can think of...

XBox live map packs. Bastards take me $10-$15 every time on the Call of Duty franchise. Just so I don't have to get kicked out of a server every time new maps get added to the rotations.

  1. Monster cables
  2. Bose speakers
  3. Expensive baby clothes (that will be outgrown in 3 months)
  4. Cigarettes
  5. Antivirus software

I'm surprised by a lot of things on people's lists. Snow tires are very useful to some people, especially if they want to run summer tires during the summer (better performance in each season compared to all-season tires).

I only buy BDs (used to buy DVDs) for movies I'll watch over and over again. An example would be a movie that we watch every year at Christmas. I'm going to watch it 20 times in the next 20 years, so why not spend $15-20 for the BD? I can't rent a BD for $1, so it will work out as being a financially sound decision.

A lot of things fall under the "excessive" category for me. I spend about $5 on alcohol per month, and I don't think that the "worst thing to spend my money on." If that number changed to $500/month, then that's different. However, I could list going out to eat, going to the movies, getting Starbucks, etc., but none of those is the worst thing to spend your money on unless it becomes excessive. One of my coworkers said that her family of 4 spends over $600/month on going out to eat! I'd say that's excessive and a bad way to spend money.

Basically, I think that half of the stuff that's been posted so far is only applicable when done in excess.

you would think they would simply match those with them together and those without together and not mix them

Dang! I'm going to have to get ahold of some whale meat and shark fin! Based on the rest of your list, those must be the best foods EVER!!

Excellent list, although I'd make some allowances for alcohol. After hours of back breaking work in the heat, sometimes there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold beer. I think that's what beer was invented for. It's gotta be.

Well it's a naughty list - doesn't mean you cannot or should not, right?

I'd have to add extreme edition cpus as well and well let's put it this way if they were hard liquor I would've passed JohnCU like a rocket car passing a snail. :D
