I hopped on there for the first time in years today. It looks like they revamped their site a bit so its more confusing to navigate, and I thought maybe they got rid of most of their "pay" features, but in fact they didnt... they just hit them better. Example, I found an old high school classmate and clicked the send email button. I got a form that appeared to be a normal messaging form so I stupidly filled it out and hit submit.

The next screen was absolutely appalling. It stated "Sign up now for a GOLD ACCOUNT so Jane Doe can read your message! Or let her sign up for a gold account so she can read it."

Are you kidding me? Do people actually pay for this website? The sad thing is, there are several people on here that I'd like to talk to, but I'm not going to deal with their gestapo tactics.

Thinking back to when I first saw it and signed up for it, I should've made a clone. Look at facebook now.

A clone that was ad driven, not paid-member driven.. that would have been great.

Yeah that site sucks. Navigation blows, it's slow, and like you said to actually do anything remotely useful with it you need to pay. F that pile of shit.

I don't think there's a need for it at all. But it came out a long time ago, before Facebook and MySpace I think, so it was handy then I guess. I graduated in 2001 and remember signing up on Classmates probably that year, and I don't think Facebook or MySpace were out then.

These days I can find pretty much any old friend I want to talk to between Facebook and MySpace so Classmates is pretty much ignored now by me.

yea i figure. i felt the same way. damnit i remember in 2000 when i was walking around campus thinking of how i could sell my books to other students. This was before facebook and craigslists. I wanted to figure out a way to connect my school w/ the surrounding schools. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... look what i missed out on.

I graduated college in 2000, and signed up at Classmates around then... as did a large portion of my old high school friends that were not particularly computer savvy. While I have found a bunch of people on myspace and facebook, finding people who graduated high school in 96 is truly hit or miss.

I signed up once for their pay fetures and it was a mistake. Your old classmate can't reply back to you unless they upgrade to a pay membership too. That site sucks and they will not get my biz again.
