Mine was an electric lawnmower. got a b&d unit a couple months ago from lowes for ~$150. power/cutting ability is great, but the cord is a major PITA. I thought lightweight, easy to start, quiet, low maintenance, i'll give it a shot. def not worth it. cordless varieties are out since the battery is lucky to last a year and a half.

I've used it about 10 times now, planned my routes, etc. the cord just gets stuck on everything; corners, sprinkler heads, bushes, trees, i step on it, etc.. it's also terrible in tight areas. anyways /rant

wat are some of your recently stupid purchases?

A CliffNotes GRE review book - what a piece of shit. It's laden with errors and not very good.

A $5 roll of "Poster Mounting Tape" from 3M that turned out to be just wider-than-usual double-sided tape. Totally ripped off.

lol. I prefer masking tape to mount posters on the wall, but it can sometimes cause the posters to rip when removing the masking tape - though, I've solved that problem by using a small amount of packing tape on the back of the poster to provide a smooth edge for the masking tape to sit on.

Just don't get that blue sticky tack - holds posters well, but it's a pain in the ass to get off the wall. I left my last apartment with that shit all over the white walls - I tried to clean it off, but my efforts were not very successful. The new tenants that moved in immediately didn't complain and I got my entire security deposit back :).

Engine stand from Harbor Freight - I just didn't really need to spend the money on it right now.

Basic Semiconductor Physics. (I bought a used copy, so I was only out about $20.)

Product Description
This book presents a detailed description of the basic physics of semiconductors. All the important equations describing the properties of these materials are derived without the help of other textbooks. The reader is assumed to have only a basic command of mathematics and some elementary semiconductor physics. The text covers a wide range of important semiconductor phenomena, from the simple to the advanced. Examples include recent progress in semiconductor quantum structures such as two-dimensional electron-gas systems, ballistic transport, the quantum Hall effect, the Landauer formula, the Coulomb blockade and the single-electron transistor.

Open it to any page, and you're greeted with some stuff that looks like Calc III or higher, integrals of matrices or some crazy stuff that would send Stephen Hawking home crying.
Then the introduction starts out by saying that the book is intended for graduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Evidently there's a lot of wiggle-room in the word "basic."

$600 bike I bought a year ago and barely use.

runner up would be the portable dishwasher that I bought at around the same time and use just as infrequently.

giving the bike away to my sister whenever I get around to taking it apart and putting it in my car... I've been thinking about throwing the dishwasher up for free on craigslist to anyone who can come and pick it up and hoping I get some nibbles.

I actually got sticky tack as a future replacement :p but it's white, but my walls are blue. What I ended up doing with the posters I already mounted is use a lot of double-sided tape with some invisible tape on the edges to keep it up. My roommate is using masking tape for his posters, but it looks pretty terrible. I had good experiences with sticky tack as a kid in elementary school, so I really wanted to use the setuff again

wat are some of your recently stupid purchases?

I've had the B&D cordless since 2004 and never had to replace the batteries.

However, last year I switched to a reel mower out of curiosity. It is better in every way. quieter, cuts cleanly like scissors, does not need to be charged, and is easier to store during the winter.

Worst recent purchase was strawberry mint bubblegum, it tastes good at first but after a few days it isn't so great. Of course, I bought the 3 pack.
