Happened last night to me as well. My local theatre had 7 midnight showings and I specifically asked for theatre 23/24 because they have huge screens and moderate seating also because they are the closest to the exit which having been to other midnight showings(fellowship and two towers) the emptying of the parking garage is a nightmare. Got there around 10:30 to find good parking and eat something and when we go give our tickets at theatre 23 the usher was just letting anyone with tickets for LOTR in. Which is completely stupid if you think about it.

Anyways, the crowd was annoying as hell. Not to mention that there was almost a fight for seating before the movie or previews even started. Of course it was all talk and both guys got kicked out. On top of that my retard magnet brought forth the most obnoxious and loud person of the whole theatre and made them sit next to me and my friend. This person screamed and clapped for the previews of Harry Potter and that Pitch Black spin-off with Vin Diesel so you can only imagine the rest of the movie. Then when Aragorn goes to the Passage of the Dead these green vertical lines started popping up on the screen. For a good 10 minutes it lasted until it was fixed. Pretty freaking annoying. The majority of the crowd just seemed to be there because it was the "in" thing to do and to say they did it. They laughed through the whole ending like if they expected a comedy which thank god Gimli wasn't treated as the court jester this time around.

I just want to know when did going to midnight opening day showings of movies get so popular? Not coutning Fridays and Saturdays of course. I remember not that long ago if you told someone that you went to go see a movie at midnight on a freaking Tuesday they thought you were mentally defective. Just what the hell happened! :p

Remember, this wasn't the opening for Gigli. This was arguably the best movie of the year, and it was marketed well.
Edit: Forgot to add that most college kids are home now, many kids have half days at school, and people are out late shopping since the malls have holiday hours.

2 experiances come to mind.

1. I went to see the bourne identity one evening at a local theater at the time the biggest in town (16 screens) and just before the movie started these 2 people came in with about 5 mentaly retarded people. They were in wheel chairs and couldn't move. One of the people proceeded to take one guy out and put him in a regular theater chair (this was down front between the first 4 rows of chairs and the risers) which i thought was wierd.

Anyways after the movie a friend of mine who was there mentioned that he had a relative who had some illness that resembled these. He said that one thing the doctor told them was they had a hard time telling the difference between whats real and whats not. This explains what happened. Everything was OK until the part where the first assasin busts through the glass and starts shooting a machine gun. They all lost it. They started screaming bloody murder and proceeded to do so till the end of the movie. I couldn't belive that someone would make them sit through a movie they couldn't tell was a movie and moreover scream though the whole thing.

2. I went to see kill bill for the 9pm show a week after it came out. watched the whole movie and then as we were leaving there was a couple with 3 kids there. 1 in a stroller!! and 2 that were maby 3 and 6 years old. They didn't make noise that i could hear but geez, they are a little young to watch people get thier arms cut off.

That's horrible about the mentally hadicapped people. But they have lives too. You should have been focusing on the movie, not someones elses misfortune @ birth.

When I attempted to see Elf about three weeks ago, the movie projection was WAY off. We could see the microphones above the actor's heads! Needless to say, I walked out and got my money back.

I don't expect a perfect movie going experience EVERYTIME, but can't multiplexes at least have some common decency to do some quality control?

You mean in the movie itself? The multiplex would have nothing to do with that, that's just sloppy production value on the part of the company that made the movie.

Dude, the day you can sit through 60 minutes of action movie while contesting the screaming fright of about a half dozen mentally handicapped people (Have you ever seen how they go off? I have, and it's neither a quiet nor a quick display)... well, I'll give you a :cookie; Of course that assumes that there was no sarcasm involved in your statement. Suffice it to say, the bar around here has been lowered to the point where it's getting hard to tell.

Thankfully the worst experience I had was at The Hulk. Again, a 6-7 year old kid out with his folks. He was sitting almost directly behind me and kept asking daddy to explain... well, just about everything in the movie for the first 20 min of it. "Who's that? What's that? Where is that? What's going on? What did he just say?" Argh, drove me nuts. At least he finally quieted down or his father managed to make him understand that he shouldn't talk.

You saw the boom mikes? Dude, that stuff gets cropped out of the final print. Are you sure you didn't see shadows from the folds in the curtains? Unless of course the production values were really crappy and they left that in by mistake.

You might want to add that to the movie goofs.

This is why I spent so much on a home theater system. No more theaters for me, thank you. And with DVD releases following movie releases by only a couple of months, I don't have long to wait.

How is seeing boommikes the theater's fault??? That's in the print.

I went to Out of Time with my dad and my brother and two minutes before the movie started about 10 14-year-olds came in and sat in the back row. The proceeded to run in and out of the theater every 10 minutes and talk constantly. One guy finally pulled one aside and told him to tell his friends to quiet down which obviously didn't help. He then went and got a manager who walked in, said two words to the kids and then left and didn't come back. Five minutes after the manager left the kids picked up where they left off. That was one of the most frustrating movies I have ever been to. My dad called the theater the next day and they sent us passes to any movie. That was cool of them. Apparently the policy is supposed to be that the manager should check up like 15 minutes later to make sure that whoever caused the problem has knocked it off for good, but that never happened.

EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT/THIS MORNING.

Here's what the daughter was saying, she was okay compared to her little heathen of a brother:
"WHY IS FRODO LAYING LIKE THAT? WHY ARE THEY CRYING? WHY AM I A WHINY BITCH?!"

For those of you who think that it's not the theater's fault, look at Roger Ebert's column and read the question regarding "The Secret Lives of Dentists." :p;)

/edit Further explanation -- during a behind the scene documentary, have you ever seen the monitor that directors look at whenever they are filming a scene? What's the aspect ratio? 1:33:1! It's not 1:85 or 2:35:1. HOWEVER, usually you can see the "border" for the part of the picture that the director intends to film.

During a good projection, what appears on the screen on a movie theater is what the director sees in that "border". However, the film that is sent to the theater also includes that extra area that wasn't meant to be shown. When a projectionist frames the film incorrectly, the wrong part of the film is shown.

I've been to a theater that did that just about every movie. Terrible.
