i was one of the many that recently bought an Opteron before they raised the prices so i was very excited to open the package. after opening the brown box, i noticed that there was some green particles in the CPU window.

to my dismay when i opened the retail box, i noticed that the lower left corner of the green tray was disentegrated. should i immediately send the package back or wait till the rest of the parts arrive and see if it works?

clicky

I have read that a few times on here. It is supposedly a common problem of amd with these chips. The last time I read it the guy blew it off and it worked fine...

It's fine. As long as none of the pins are bent the processor should be fine.

EDIT: and might as well see if it works.

i haven't actually taken the cpu out to check on the pins as that seems like it's still seated firmly and there was no discernable damage to the tray in it's immediate area. i was worried about the HSF also as that seems that it got the brunt of whatever hit the box.

thanks guys, i feel a lot better knowing that the CPUs turned out ok. must be something wrong with that green biodegradable tray they're using.

right, the green stuff is total crap. you just look at it and it falls apart. AMD really went out of their way to make sure their product is packaged well. Cost cutting at its finest :disgust:

I've never had any experience with the stuff, however, from what I see there, it looks like that packaging is crap. Doesn't even look like the closest heatpipe or plastic was dented or anything. You're definately fine. I wouldn't even think twice. I've had CPU's with bent pins that never gave me any issues. :)

My 146 came the exact same way. I did find it odd, but I found no reason for concern.

It's definitley not the first item I've received where the packaging material was in bad shape. But that is it's purpose. Absorb the beating that the shipping companies give out while maintaing the integrity of the item it's protecting. And it did it's job well.

Same here with my 148 from monarch. Haven't installed the CPU yet though. No damage to the plastic shell the cpu itself was in though. Some of the green particles look like they got in the hinge of the shell. I'll just use some compressed air before I seat it. On a funny note, I threw out all the pulverized green packing/dust, and came home to find that my dog had eaten it out of the trash.
