Worried About Wombat

I am very concerned about the well-being of WombatWoman. She has taken down her web page and has disabled private messaging in the forums, and now emails addressed to her are being returned to the sender.

Please, has anyone heard from her? If she does not wish to correspond, that is certainly understandable, but I would like to know that she is all right. I know there are others here who care for her.


We miss her too, but refuse to let this thread turn into a haven for the insensitive, to continue to flame and criticise. This thread will now be locked.

ww, has been around for like ever, and i guess sghe went into hiding, after a nearly fatal medical problem. and now she's left for good due to the pettieness of some other elite's. She's not bad, but she didn't want to hang around to stand for hte abuse of some one whom shall remain nameless. gall durn it, it's like she's done died for real now.

Even in anonimity, people deserve to be treated respectfully. Flame wars can easily get out of hand when you're not face-to-face. It takes discipline but serious personal attacks can be avoided. I had to step on the breaks and remove myself from a thread recently because a twit persisted in goading and flaming me. Plus I've seen Red do it. If he can do it anyone can.

WW hasn?t been around that long, but her sense of humor & wits got her promoted to Den Mother. Which causes a lot of bitterness among the seasoned members, and it all come from both tittles/elitism & her wits (Anantech felt that there is a need for moderation implementation to clean up the forums from trolls).


Personal rant:

I was & am oppose to the idea include the original idea of registration before posting in the forum/s. Because, imposing rules and regulations could impeach the trading of ideas & and leaving insecure personal information for malicious use (PM & emails is just another way for people to have private wars, and it will bleed into the forums because people can?t control them self when angry). And, as you can see imposing and moderation of speech is not going to stop trolls from rearing their ugly heads.

But, as a Corporation capital gains has to be protected, therefor there is a need to have moderation to attract hits/adds...in away Anandtech lost the innocence that Anand has often mentioned in his past posts. Anand have lost some control of this site, because behind the scene Anandtech is run by the corporations/adds contributions.

It is sad that progress destroy the environment that it come from, but with out progress the beauty would wither & die due to stagnate. I?m not implying that Anand is doing a poor job, but he is actually doing a great job as a CEO of a company. Anand is like most great company founder, who?s have a beautiful idealize vision. And, to realizes that vision he & others great CEO have to make compromises, that may dilute some of the innocence along the road to success.

To end my rant: The unfortunate holly wars between the Elite's are unfortunate evens that we all have to endure, because it is just part of society. And it remind us to respect one another as human, and not because of our tiles or position in life.

BTW, Jean will be OK. Like it SHOULD be, she comes here for FUN. If it becomes not fun, she leaves. Some people let negative things from these forums bug them IRL. One way not to let that happen is to leave altogether. Another way is to just flame away and do nothing but blow off steam, and laugh at the people who take it too seriously. Well, she didn't have the energy to flame right now, so she left. She'll be OK, and so will the rest of us. (unless you are taking yourself and other members too seriously on here, in which case you're probably crying right now over some meaningless flames.)

On another note: Anandtech is run by the corporations/adds contributions, hell yes it is. You think Intel, AMD, Mushkin, ATI, etc want to come into the forums and see a bunch of kids, or even adults, throwing flames and sh1t at one another? Hell no. Have we all forgotten that this is a Computer Hardware Review website? This site allegedly brings in $1M a year in ad revenue! (That's 1 million dollars for all you youngsters) You think for one minute they want to jeopardize that with all the sh1t going on in Off Topic. Go to a large company's website and see if they have an Off Topic in their forums! They don't. Many don't even have a Forum! I'd be surprised if ATOT gets lopped off the list here one day!

Actually...I was against OT as well, because it was a waste of band width...Such as the WMC, flame wars (GUTB), useless threads (Butter), AOL personal add threads, and treads that newbies begs for tittles (Palson), etc....

I believe that the original forum (single BBS) attracted some of the most brilliant mind on the internet, because the board was an open board (engineers &amp; scientists as far as Russia &amp; Germany, just to name a few that I can recall). Then the registration crack down coupe with the flakiness of the UBB code wean many great people away from this site. And, with ?the new &amp; improve board? (colours &amp; GUI), attracted computer illiterate users that flames &amp; post useless threads.

Then the upgrade to FuseTalk for a logical reason and growth of the board (more bell and whistle to attract more newbies). And, it was and instant hits, due to Anand hard working team &amp; many others great web master &amp; engineers contributions &amp; reputations. The newbies come flooding in with out knowing what this site stand for. They brought in their baggage of humors, pain &amp; bitterness, which instantly turn this great tech site into AOL Chat room.

To combat against the inevitable tide of progress, Anandtech implemented titles &amp; accidentally created elitism among the users &amp; self proclaim trolls (mostly to control problems from OT, HD, FS/T). And, so much $$$ flows in like manna from heaven from 10 thousands (soon to to 100,000s) members clicks The rookie Modsquad was quickly put together and the rules didn?t have time to developed clearly, combine with elitism/titles there were a senses of favoritism/bitterness among some of the members which causes theses unfortunate skirmishes.

Sorry for the rant, but I just want you to know what this site is and how it get here (with great helps, guidance &amp; encouragement from Tomshardware.com ? Thomas Fabst, Tweakit.com ? Dan Chadwick, and I think TheBrotherHoodOfTheCPU.com). And, to end this note; Anandtech may have not make as much $$$ if it stick with the original idealistic way, but it will still be round with a smaller number of the true computer enthusiasts in stead of the Trolls that we often have to endure

That's what attracted me to these forums: reasonable discussion of all stuff hardware. Hey it took me months to discover Off Topic. You're dead on when you say all these personal attacks and flame wars hurt the forum. Luckily these are mostly confined to OT but I've seen creep into the &quot;serious&quot; forums, too. Bodes ill.

I knew I hadn't heard from WW in a couple of days, but after all the flaming the other day I assumed she was just taking a break. I did not realize she had shut off PMs and mail I enjoy her posting and contributing to threads here a great deal, and fail to see why if someone was in disagreemnt with any element of another person they refuse to either keep it to themself or at least discuss it in a reasonable way. From what I've seen and understand the attacks are completely lacking in reason. No one deserves to be hit with a barrage of hate like that.

Yep, she is rallying support alright. She sent out a mass email, and we are all to meet out back and have us a rumble. I got my switchblade and my leather jacket that say's Wombat's Warriors all ready......

Come on, get real. The poor woman has been harrassed by idiots for almost six months straight now. They attacked her through any and every avenue they could get to her. It's easy to say it should not affect you, but when every aspect of what you do online is attacked, it has to make your life miserable. And you can say walk away from the computer, but why should she have to give up what she enjoys because of morons who have nothing better to do than type up mean and vicious things to say?
