Worried about my parents **UPDATE**

I'm not sure what to do here. I live a few hours from my parents, and I'm at work right now. They are retired, so they are usually home. I've been trying to get ahold of them all day, and their phone has been busy, and my Dad's cell is turned off. I also tried email my mom, but she hasn't responded. She usually is on the computer a good portion of the day playing poker, and usually responds quickly. This entire thing is VERY unusual for them, so I'm pretty worried. My dad has had a lot of health problems lately, so I'm worried something could have happened.

If I call the operator, can they tell me if the phone is off the hook, or if someone is on the phone? Any other suggestions? None of my siblings live close to them, and I don't know anyone else who lives in their city (they recently moved there). I take the train to work, so even if I was to take off to drive to their house, it would be an hour home to get my car, then two to three hours to their house depending on traffic.

And smartasses, I already expect the "they are getting it on" and "they hate you and don't want to talk to you" responses. Haha, funny. Give me some real advice.

**Update**
OK, well I got a hold of them finally. My dad called me out of the blue. Apparently they have some cleaning service at their house cleaning the carpets and the heater vents. I'm guessing they accidentely knocked the phone off the hook or something (not sure how that happens with a cordless though) when they started this morning. And my dad forgot to turn on his cell.

Usually, in case of emergency, the operator can interrupt the conversation I believe.

An operator will interupt the call for you and/or verify the line is being used. Tell them it's an emergency.

as a former private investigator, i'll tell you that the operator can, at a charge of $7.50 (maybe $6.50), check if the phone is busy or if the person is talking on the other line. try that.

Like I said, I live a few hours from them, and I'm at work. I commute by train to work. So hour to get to my car, plus 2-3 hours to get to their house.

I get off work at 5, if this is still going on by the time I get home to my car, I'll drive there.

They will also be able to tell if it is off the hook or not too.

go to 411.com and do a reverse lookup on address.. just put in their street and city.. find a neighbor.. call 'em and tell 'em you're worried, and see can they check if the car is there.

argh! I called the operator and told them the situation. The guy said I needed to contact a long distance operator and asked me what carrier I wanted. I said SBC because that's what both my parent's and I use. So I get the long distance operator and she tells me I need to contact phone repair. I call phone repair, and none of the menu items match what I need. I'm on hold now. Jeez.

Well at least that mystery is solved.

Obviously they WERE getting it on, and we could have told you that if you hadn't been so hostile in your OP ;)
