Thankfully I only work on the 48th floor. So what is that... like 1.5 weeks?

I would go as far as to say the UAE is one of the only countries thats actually investing their oil money wisely to build themselves a future after the oil money runs dry.

Very few other nations in the ME do this. (not none, before someone gos correcting me)

I believe only 30% of UAE's income is derived from oil profits; wihhc is indeed a far cry from the oil-rich nations of the area. I don't know how accurate that number is...but I believe it's pretty close. Dubai scares me though...all of this growth ocurring within the last decade...I wonder how stable they can become after such an explosive economy. The most recent National Geograpic puts the expats-to-natives ratio at 9 to 1.

Yes, and lots, lots more.

Only 7-star hotel in the world... for one.

I looked at the rooms - the cheapest one I could find was $1200 a night.

Not sure about UAE as the whole but I know that Dubai only has 6% of its income come from Oil.

As far as buildings go, I guess it's easy to build world's talest buildings and world's best hotels when you have virtually endless suply of very cheap labor.

Not many M.E nations rely on oil (population-wise)

Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel have no oil revenue.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Iran, Iraq need oil for revenue.

Saudi Arabia is a shithole that has Islamic laws. Nobody wants to go to S.A other than Muslims for Mecca.
Iran is a shithole that has Islamic laws. Nobody wants to go to Iran other than foreign Iranians

UAE, Kuwait, Qatar are all very small nations that can benefit by bringing in tourism and industry. They will survive when oil runs out. They do not have strict rules that will conflict with the value's of people from the West.
UAE should be down to only 40% dependent on oil for income. Next year it should be 32%.
Qatar and Kuwait are following by trying to build new buildings to attract tourism.

Saudi Arabia is following too. They are making their kings and queens richer so when the oil runs out they can have a nice mansion in Beverly hills.

The UAE is indeed one of the few (including Qatar and Kuwait) that are thinking ahead and realize that their oil will eventually run out. Dubai has this amazing water park as well. they will survive without a doubt.

very cool tower though. wonder if it could withstand a hit from a plane. newer building, especially ones this high, are built to withstand at least the kinetic energy from a plane.

They damaged cars, offices, computers, and construction tools to the value of over a million dollars."

This kind of thing makes me nervous. With such a large structure, holding so many people, one of the last thing I'd want is pissed off workers potentially doing a lousy job.
And look at what was going on in Boston's Big Dig project. Parts of the ceiling collapsed or were loose, accusations of substandard materials are flying, and the thing leaks like crazy. How many other corners might they be cutting when they're skimping on workers' pay and working conditions?

How are super-powerful videocards profitable? They can be when enthusiasts pay $500+ apiece, when a regular consumer-level card is less than $100.

that isn't correct.. Burj Dubai is going to be taller than the Taipei tower for sure according to what the government has declared. The link has not been updated since the Burj Dubai has not been completed as yet..

Dubai is full of Europeans, Muslims, U.S. citizens etc. we have U.S. Universities there as well

You forgot the South Asians ( especially Indians ).. Make up a majority of the expatriate population in UAE. Europeans and US citizens are in the minority..

I thought they gave a figure of 6% in the national geographic!

Marketing gimmick.. Thats how it works in Dubai... All properties seem to be sold within a maximum of 72 hours. ;)

yes ...very safe as long as you use some common sense and respect local customs.. For example, dont eat outside during month of ramadan, etc, etc.

I can't find much information about the mall.

This one, right?

How does it compare to the Mall of America in Minneapolis and it's big new expansion they are planning, essentially doubling the size of it I think.
