WTF does jacob's ladder mean?

A Jacob's Ladder is the type of high voltage "climbing arc" display seen in many old Sci-Fi movies.

When overcurrent devices flat out fail, bad things tend to happen. How many of you have lost power in the middle of the night and see the sky light up while hearing grunting, booms, etc? Those faults can be quite destructive. When overcurrent protection fails, catastrophic damage to switchgear is often the case.

This is one example.

Since the overcurrent protection kept the power on, the arcing heated the transformer real fast. Fast enough that the oil boiled in a matter a minute and built up enough pressure to blow open relief valves. This is evident in the video. It appears to be an extinguishing agent. The resulting explosion stops the arcing when the leads are severed, however. :Q

Cheers!
