there was a time program back in the day called Geochron that had a similar display...was pretty sweet. you could set the date and time and see the sunlight for that specific moment.

Can't you get this as a wallpaper?

You could save the image as wallpaper but I'm not aware of any program that auto-updates. Someone could write something to fetch the image and update it, wouldn't be hard at all.

Ya there's a program that does it. I had it for a few days, can't remember what it's called though. Desktop Earth or something like that.

Is the light/darkness on the image from a real satellite image, or is it just an algorithm that runs that masks a night image and a day image of earth?

Considering it says "real time clouds" I imagine its legit satellite data or at least a computer mockup of real data.

how accurate are those night lights?

every tv show and computer program seems to reach for some version of this composite satellite picture:

except for being a few years old, it should be totally accurate with respect to geography.
