World Premiere of the New BMW M5?s Drive System

After taking forever w/ popups and redirects, I got to the page....

That's impressive, but I was hoping for more power. Still, it should be enough to set the RS6 in it's place.

How long until someone proclaims that the Viper engine is a POS because it "needs" 8L to make that HP without considering the cost+weight of the BMW engine?

I had already thought it. THe BMW is far more efficient. And what do you mean weight? The BMW engine is lighter...

Who give a crap about efficiency. I'd take my chances with reliability on the Viper 8.1 anyway. And the Viper engine has an a$$load more torque as well, especially down low.

There is also a new V10 coming out of Ford soon.
I don't like the idea of going tech crazy on an engine to squeeze out a little bit more performance when it's simpler to just add more displacement. More things to go wrong.

520Nm==384LB/ft.

How do you know that it's lighter? There's nowhere in that article that lists weight even once. That block ends about where the belts go up, above that it's all head until the top of the valve cover. *begin speculation* Looks like there's about three times more mass in the cylinder heads than a Viper's. I'd venture to say that the weight is about the same overall, the Viper's is longer, and the BMW is wider. The HP is about the same, but the Viper kills it in torque and cost. *end speculation*

Because the big deal when they anounced the M5 engine was that it would sport a Magnesium block, and be significantly lighter than the old 5.2l v8. So I guess I know because I'm smarter than you?

the old M5 V8 was 5.0L, if that is what you are talking about.

the old M5 V8 was 5.0L, if that is what you are talking about.

Yup, that's what I meant. I was thinking it was a 5.2l bored from a 5.0l, but it's a 5.0l bored from a 4.4l !

I just realized the 525i has the 184hp 2.5l i6... I thought the smallest engine they put in a 5 series was the 3.0 i6... I wonder if the 525i can move under it's own power?
