I believe he asked "what's the cheapest way to play World of Warcraft" and not playing would nullify his goal, as he would not be playing. Therefore that solution would not be applicable to the OP.

You need a full version of the game to play. You can't continue playing past a trial period unless you bought the full game.

You should probably download another trial, buy the game, then register the game after your new trial account expires. Your total game time will be between 40-45 days depending on the trial period, WoW shouldn't run more than $20.

The more you pay in advance the cheaper it is. I think 6 months is like $12.99/mo.
You can download the trial (which is the full version) and then activate an account. A 60 day game card is around $30.

You have to buy the game in order to retrieve your trial account, so that cost is unavoidable (I think when I was playing it was $20 for the game and by now it might only be another $20 for the expansion)

I was usually able to find at least one person selling the game cards, I got a few on FS/FT for less than $12 a piece. That would have to be the cheapest way to play.

I don't see why you'd want to play though, especially with a new expansion coming out either end of this year or beginning of next. Starting now would be a waste :p I'd start maybe a month or two before the next expansion if I wanted to play.

The random factor of running into people while leveling adds a lot to the game imo. That leads to it being more socialable as well once again imo. I also never played a nonmmorpg that had as good of an endgame as WoW (No ragnaros to beat no GM level to obtain (or tournament to beat)).

so its just one world when you're playing??? couldn't someone else be doing a quest that you wanted to do? do you wait till they're done and the monsters reset or something??

Usually not a problem. If the quest involves a unique mob you can team up with other people. Quests where you kill a bunch of a mob to complete usually have plenty of them around to do. It's been designed so that crowding isn't usually a problem.

There's a WoW Visa card that earns points for purchases. If you use your CC a lot you would earn lots of free game time.

Not sure if this is legal, but there are free private servers out there

If you aren't paying the company for their product, it isn't legal.

$50 should get you your first three months of WoW covered($20 for game, then $30 for two months). Unless you are looking for a long term commitment, there isn't much movement in terms of cost.

Normal RPGs you work your way through the levels and complete the game. MMORPG you work your way through the levels and then start the game. In MMORPGs leveling is a necessary evil you deal with to get to the real game.

I disagree. The point of an MMO is to be playing with 2000 people in a giant persistent world. If you WORK through an MMO to get to what you consider the endgame, you need to get a life

And there are plenty of people that would say if you play a MMO at all or if you take the time to rack up thousands of posts on a tech forum you need to get a life too. What exactly is your point? Content development is focused on end game, development budget is focused on end game, the majority of players on are focused on end game- but hey, they must all have everything wrong :)

So wait, I should wait out until the new expansion set? I'm already downloading the trial for the original, and plan on re-activating my account. Should I even bother? I left off at lvl 14 last Spring Break, dunno if there are any low levels like me even around, no?

You could always roll on one of the newer servers. Tons of low lvls on those servers.
