World of Warcraft: macros, do you use them?

I just started learning about macros in WoW today. In case you don't know what they are, it is a built in scripting system in WoW that lets you have a hotkey button for doing things like saying "I have a x, y, z for sale", or combining a healing spell with text to say "healing johndoe".

Anyway, there is a big debate raging on the various WoW forums about if this is going to be abused or not. Personally, I think if the devs put it in, we should use it how we like.

I'm interested in how some of the people here are, or are not, using macros in WoW. Any useful ones you can copy/paste here for everyone else to try? Or links to sites that have info and such on macros?

Blizzard finally posted a list of commands to use in macros! Here it is:
There are a couple of special powerful commands that can be used in macros that are beyond the scope of basic macros.

/console command - Execute a console command (console commands are not documented and are subject to change)
/script commands - Execute lua script commands (scripting is beyond the scope of this document)

These are the general slash commands that can be used in macros. Note that there are abbreviations for many of these, but I've used the long form for clarity.

/assist [name] - Assist your target or the named unit if specified
/cast name - Cast the named spell, which may include the rank in parenthesis
/afk [message] - Toggle yourself as "away from keyboard"
/dnd [message] - Toggle yourself as "do not disturb"
/duel [name] - Request a duel with your target, or the named unit if specified
/yield - Surrender to your opponent in a duel
/emote message - Emote the message (e.g. /emote picks his nose -> [slouken] picks his nose)
/follow - Automatically move to follow your current target
/guild message - Send the message to your guild chat
/ignore name - Toggle ignoring the named unit
/inspect - Inspect your target
/invite [name] - Invite your target or the named unit to your group
/join name - Join (or create) the named chat channel
/leave name - Leave the named chat channel
/logout - Sit down and logout
/ffa - Set "free for all" loot policy
/master name - Set the named unit to be the master looter
/roundrobin - Set "round robin" loot policy
/party message - Send the message to your party chat
/played - Show how much time your character has been online
/pvp - Enable PvP for the next 5 minutes
/raid message - Send the message to your raid chat
/random NUM - Roll a random number between 1 and 100, or between 1 and num if num is specified
/reply message - Send the message to the last player to whisper to you
/say message - Send the message to people around you
/target name - Target the named unit
/time - Show the current game time
/trade - Initiate a trade with your target
/uninvite name - Remove the named unit from your group
/whisper name message - Whisper the message to the named unit
/who - List the players around your level in the current zone

This is a list of text emotes that can be used in macros. Some of them have associated animations and sound. Most of them have different forms depending on whether you have somebody targeted.

Good thread. I haven't got my game yet, but I'll eventually want to start using some of these macros.

I use a macro to feed my pet the first item in a bag slot. I would like to make a macro some day to "begin combat" but I have been struggling to find the perfect timing of everything.

Oh yeah, FYI, if anyone here is the guy on aggramar who has a yell macro about cleansing burblongs that goes off every 2 minutes in darkshore, then I hate you and hope you die.

It's an NPC yelling as part of a quest. Please tell me that was sarcasm.

Not using any at this point, although now that you've reminded me, I think I'll make one for hibernate:

"DO NOT ATTACK XYZ, YOU RETARDS, I'M SLEEPING IT"

their site is down, or has been for a few days. There are a lot of people who don't trust the devs. Some suspicious code they released, poor attitude towards community, etc. etc.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I avoided using comsos in OB because of some of the stuff I read about them. I was worried there might be some extra exploits or backdoors they had buried in the code.

From the links above, it seems like there are a few good alternatives to cosmos that offer some of the same features.

Can anyone elaborate on this? I've been using cosmos, but this is the first time I've heard of any rumors regarding the devs. Should I be worried?

Their site seems to have backbone or DDOS problems. If you wait long enough it comes up. You can also try .com, I don't know if that makes any difference.

I'd like to know more about this "not trusting developers" thing too. Cosmos is the most popular ui enhancement seemingly (at least based on several threads on the wow site).

I just know I've read some posts on other WoW forums where people were bashing the Cosmos developers. I don't know any facts, just second hand stuff.

I just installed the CTMod, and it is great! Almost too much stuff on the screen at once, but it's nice having all my spells right there to use. :)

I didn't experience this myself, but I think what I read on the official Cosmos forums is that one of the releases had some sort of hidden code that made you automatically execute a macro whenever you targetted a certain developer's character or their guild member or something like that.

Now, that doesn't sound so bad, and I think they may have removed that specific code, but it makes you wonder what else they may have hidden in there.

Macros are fine, it's the bots that piss me off. Like the one developed for fishing that caused Blizzard to shut down higher level fishing for now.

About Cosmo
Oh, I didn't know. I sampled it in beta and worked fine. I guess I could try other things too. There were others that seemed interesting without all the extras I don't need that cosmo has.

I think it may also be the reason for most of the errors i get every few hours.

That's the other reason I stayed away from Cosmos in beta. I'm running on an older system and with all the server problems, I wanted to avoid any additional crashes or downtime that might be caused by Cosmos.

Well, I'll probably give Cosmos or one of the others a try. Now that I'll be playing "for real," I'll definitely appreciate the added features. And honestly, since so many other people are using them, I'd probably be at a disadvantage without them.

Ok, I just tried to dig up as much as I could about the Cosmos "exploit". Basically, there was a part of Cosmos or a mod called Corruption that allows you to give custom titles to players you target (only you can see them). One of the Cosmos devs was angry with some random player, so he included code that said "don't group with this player" for everyone who installed a certain version of Cosmos.

This happened back in October and I guess it was quickly removed from the installer, but after the incident a lot of people thought it was a pretty immature thing to do and lost trust in Cosmos (since they wondered what other hidden malicious code might be included).

Anyway, only one member of the Cosmos dev team was responsible, and I haven't found mention of any trouble since then. I think the other team members have been working hard to re-establish trust in the community.
