Most people who are currently playing, are not in a guild. And there are plenty of guilds that do NOT require regular online meetings, etc.
We're even thinking about starting one for AT!
I hate monthly fees (im cheap, i know). if it were like $60 (and no fee afterward) i'd probably buy it... but monthly fees = teh suck
Like many things in life - in this case - you ABSOLUTELY get what you pay for. And you are free to cancel if you feel differently at any time...
i tried EQ and it took me an hour to get out of the dark elf town. honestly, wtf??? these things should be easy to navigate.
Depending on the race, some towns have better "urban planning" than others - some are staffed with NPC guides, others are not - so in that respect, sometimes you have to spend a little time finding your way through unfamiliar towns. A few friends that I invited over were actually surprised at how easy WoW was to navigate. There are virutally no limits placed on where you are able to travel. As long as you are capable of defending yourself from the locals, you can roam far and wide for hours on end. The maps in this game are
extremely large (the installer is around 4GB!), allowing you to continually explore for many months on end without seeing the same scenery twice.
