I don' t know why people love this game so much. The graphics look like crap and they make you pay a monthly fee. When people are fighting they just stand next to the guy and numbers appear to show damage --the people don't even swing their weapons half of the time! My roomate plays this at least 14 hours a day, must be something i'm missing....

The graphics are like that on purpose (*Warcraft is a semi-serious bloody but cute Fantasy...always has been)

Its really no different in style than most MMOs, if its not your thing oh well...First person shooters aren't my thing for example.

Warcraft's appeal is the fact that while it is like most other MMOs, it actually does a good job taking more of the better points from each and less of their failings...

Thanks. I might have to actually jump in on this now.

One question first though: I know there's a monthly fee, but do I have to pay every month? What I mean is that if there's a month where I know I won't be able to spend much time if any at all playing the game (e.g. December because of Christmas), can I not pay for that month and then continue payment again in January?

I play EQ and EQ2. You can go years without playing and paying monthly. You can come back as long as you remember your pw.
They haven't done a character wipe in years. Only characters they wiped recently was during a server merge. All characters level 5 and under that had not logged in in the past 3 months or what ever it was were wiped.
That sure screwed people that were away and those characters where their bazaar selling mules though :)
You can use cc or probably they use same thing as game cards of 30/60/90 days you pay for at places like EB Games.

with WoW, your account/characters are suppose to be always there if you quit playing, unless blizzard decides to change that. so yes, you can stop paying/playing and come right back whenever you want.

the game cards for WoW have a msrp of $30 and give you 2 months of play time. sometimes amazon has the cards for ~25.

edit: like right now :)

I've been thinking of picking up EQ2 and giving it a whirl. I've never been the MMO kind of guy (3 months of Planetside and a solid month and a half of WoW), but I love the concept. My only problem is I get bored easily with games.

I am a FPS kinda guy. I have been playing Guild Wars for a couple of weeks and I will say that it is really an outstanding game without the fees. The online experience is flawless and there are a lot of "Helpful" players that will team up if you are willing. I would highly recommend Guild Wars for the beginner adventurer. Heck, my father in law is now a level5 ranger and he calls me to play..... :)

Just thought I'd add the following:

A few new servers were implimented this week, so if you do decide to try it out, you can start on mostly even footing if that's your thing.

Go here (Official WoW site) and you can get a rebate on top of this deal I would assume. It should have the big banner on the top of the front page. So you can get it for $20.

But in order to qualify for the rebate, I must already be a subscriber. Why would I need another copy if I was already a subscriber?

Anyone here already a subscriber and would like to provide me with their subscriber info so I can get the rebate? If so, PM me with your WoW account name.

If you look elsewhere you can find a free shipping code for Gamestop. It's been the same one for a long time. Good deal for a CheapAssGamer like me.

Gosh, I'm not sure I can bring myself to spend $15/month to play a game. Heck, I bought Unreal Tournament (the original and best) back in Feb 2001 for $10 and it's kept me entertained for years. However, some of the people I've met in the competitive 5-on-5 teams community are WoWers too and have their own little WoW clan going. It does sound like fun, but I think I'm too much of a tightwad to do it.

My brother helped me decide. We're going to split the monthly cost and just have our own characters on the same account. Now, hopefully we can PM at our local Walmart on Friday so we don't have to order it online.

Another option is to get the 60 day prepaid card from Amazon. Currently, it's $24.99. Works out to be about $12.50/month. Buy 2 and get free shipping or pad it with something else that you might want/need. This is what I'm going to do.

Or you could just pay for the 6-month plan @ $12.99 a month.
