*EDIT* This is probably 100% bogus. On the right sidebar of the article I just noticed 2 other articles. One from Feb. states Starcraft 2 confirmed, the next from April states Starcraft 2 will be announced on May 19, and the one I linked from May states it will be WoS on May 19th instead.

Bliz has already confirmed, several times, that neither the Starcraft or Diablo series are dead--they plan on pursuing both in good time.

Bogus was referring to World of Starcraft and not to the continuation of either series.

While Blizzard still owns the rights to Diablo, all the creative people behind it are long gone. Blizzard North is no longer around and all of the talented people they had are now working on other projects. Hellgate: London is the one that will come out first and I hope it will be as good as the Diablo games were. However, any "Diablo" game created by Blizzard will not be like the Diablo games of old.

Has Blizzard ever let you down before? Just because original team members arn't there anymore, doesn't mean it wont be a similar title with much fun (whenever it does get released). Personally, I think that Hellgate looks kinda stupid... of course, I'll have to try it before I make any final comment on it because it would be really stupid to base any opinions on no real first hand knowledge.

Blizzard hasn't let me down, and I know whatever they make will be good, but I know it won't feel like the original 2 Diablo games. The reason I know this is that WoW is almost nothing like a Diablo game, they don't use a dynamic itemization system (the Diablo trademark) and the game play is more RPG and less action.

Please help me understand the bolded section. You think that because of the way itemization works in WoW that any future Diablo games will not feel like the original 2? I'm really lost on this one.

This is the newest RPG they have put out, it stands to reason that future RPGs will be similar to it. In fact I would be supprised if Diablo 3 was not an MMO.

Diablo's random itemization was fun, knowing EXACTLY what drops from everything isn't. It leads to farming the same guy over and over until he finally drops what you want. With Diablo's itemization bosses would always drop a certain number of good items, but they didn't have a loot table. I find it more fun to play the game and see what you get instead of everyone of the same class going for the same items. In Diablo it was rare to see someone using exactly what you were using, in WoW it's rare to find someone of your class who isn't using Either A) what you are using, B) something you used in the past or C) something you are trying to get now.

To me that makes the game less fun. I know others probably don't care, but I just don't like it.

I really don't agree with you here at all. Firstly due to your determination that because Diablo is an RPG, and World of Warcraft is an RPG, that the next version of Diablo will be just like World of Warcraft. I think they would have much more sense to put out a game that is very different (even if it's an MMO) ito WoW, instead of the same thing with a Diablo skin.

I'd prefer to see something like Guild Wars when Diablo 3 hits... where they say its massively multi-player, but when in reality it's just instanced worlds for mini-groups of people. I mean, that's how D2 is, except with a text frontend (just make it graphical).

I agree I would rather that, but with how much money they make on WoW the temptation will be to make it an MMO. Plus, by the time they release the new starcraft game (if starcraft is indeed next) then WoW will probably be on the decline and a new MMO would be due for them.

I truely hope Diablo 3 is not an MMO, but I just don't think it will happen.

It has already been shot down at Digg. Warcraft said in early 2006 that their next game is "definitely not an MMO." Unless this project began less than a year ago this is what it is.

you mean blizzard?

anyway, i would highly doubt they would make another MMO when their current one is so successful.

Again from the rumor mill of my friends at blizzcon last year, Diablo 3 is supposed to replace WoW when they stop making expansions. 2009.

I have to agree with Pacemaker, that Diablo 3 will not feel like diablo 1 or 2. Actually I think it could go two ways. First way is that they basically copy diablo 2 with better graphics or it ends up being a completely different game. You question his faith in Blizzard just because their name is on the original two games, but I would put much more faith in Hellgate: London because the original minds of Diablo are behind the game. I have much more faith in the actual person who made diablo than the company that owns the rights to it.

you mean like meph runs or pindle runs? there was still itemization, and the way wow does it may be different, but that really has no bearing on whether the new diablo will use the same structure. they could figure outsome way to use the dynamic itemization (that i always loved too) better, to keep the "pindleruns" down.

that'd be frickin sweet!! i hope they at least release one more edition of something StarCraft.... I love it

But look at it like this. WoW is doing awesome, better than any MMO has ever done (possibly better than all combined?). Why would they put out a game that is just going to cannibalize their cash cow? I've played a ton of MMOs but have never carried more than one subscription at a given time.

If they make a Starcraft MMO the South Korean economy would probably shut down completly!

That could very well happen if it had the same blance like SC.

So, games that Blizz felt weren't living up to their standards and were canceled lets you down? I think you should applaud their willingness to just say "Eh, it wasn't working out" instead of saying "Crap we already put a ton of cash into this title, may as well release it even though it sucks so we recoup some of our losses!"

Applaud their adherence to quality, don't shun them for it.

As for game to movie transition? They're getting better. Tomb Raider movies were fun if not a bit hokey. Resident Evil was pretty good. Silent Hill was not terrible.

I just love that your disappointment with Blizzard lies within products that were never released. Seems like some strange logic.

MMO Star Craft could work if it was MMO RTS, which I don't think has ever been done before, which makes me very skeptical. More plausible for MMO would be a MMO FPS, which would probably explain why they shut down production of SC: Ghost, as they probably would have funneled what came of that into a MMO FPS. I really doubt it will be like WoW (an MMORPG).

Now the fact that they're announcing it in Korea tells me its StarCraft 2. Heck, after WarCraft 3, some people think Blizzard is screwed trying to top StarCraft/BW, however announcing something other than an RTS sequel in Korea seems like an even worse fate. Of course that doesn't rule out the possibility of SC2 and something else, WarCraft 3 debuted promoting the upcoming WoW...

Well Diablo 3 was already cancelled once. Although the title was not released they said the game cancelled was a "Blizzard North type of game" and as Blizzard North and only ever made Diablo, and Diablo 2 it stands to reason it was Diablo 3. They did this when they eliminated Blizzard North and made it a part of Blizzard (and when most of the creative people left because of it)

I have faith in Blizzard as they have never released a bad game, but I do worry about the future of the Diablo franchise which I don't think will ever be the same.
