World of Final Fantasy

cmdrdredd

Anyone else playing this? I'm really, really enjoying the game so far. Kind of cross between Pokemon and a traditional Final Fantasy game with cameos of characters from past games. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like the chibi art style and kind of cutsey look to the world but it quickly grew on me and now I have no shame to say I absolutely love the game. It doesn't have the same type of story as the more traditional FF series but it's not bad after the first couple hours where you are bombarded with introduction. I'm having a blast collecting and leveling mirages to combine into stacks and unlock special abilities with. There's even a multiplayer arena where you can trade and/or challenge other players.

Just wondering if anyone else was playing this. I have to almost force myself to stop leveling my mirages because I've sunk so much time into it.

First I've heard of this actually.
Reviews for it actually look decent but I'm waiting for 15. Kind of weird for me them to release another console Final Fantasy game so close to 15 which has been highly anticipated for literally a decade.

I think this is a way to make FF series more accessible to more casual gamers. I'm sure anyone that is used to playing only pokemon or less that stumbles on a recent FF title would be flabbergasted at what the world and game style appears to be (notwithstanding that may or may not be true). This is dipping a toe in an ocean, hoping you'll jump in.

Yeah after poking around, this game actually looks pretty good.

Not really because this game is more for nostalgia and fan service really. It is for a different audience. FF15 looks too much like a bad action game to me. Totally not interested in it. This is the first game bearing the final fantasy name I have actually thought was good since 10.

That's why I was interested in it because it harkens back to FF games of old but unfortunately there are so many good things games releasing in Oct and Nov and I've already got three games and gonna get FF 15 when it releases as well. Not enough time for all these good games.

I picked this up, but I haven't had a chance to start it yet. I have watched a few people play it on Twitch, and I can say that the first thing that I'll be doing is turning on Japanese voices. I've also read a few reviews on it, and the biggest complaint was probably that the story was almost too sophomoric. From what I saw, I can probably agree with that. The script in the cutscenes that I was able to see was just very... simple. In other words, don't go into it expecting some grandiose Final Fantasy game. Although, it's interesting, because I heard similar complaints about I Am Setsuna, which was a game created by a Square-Enix subsidiary.

I read that the producer was given specific instructions to make the game lighthearted and such and that's what we got and I'm honestly ok with it after getting a decent way into it though the story does have a bit of a dark twist to it later on. I like the English voices better than the Japanese as well. I tried both and I got used to Tama's speech problem and it became sort of a cute character trait rather than ending her sentences with "nano desu" in the Japanese which I guess means something like "that is so"? I think the voices fit either way but I just think hearing Lann say "What the honk?" instead of actually swearing among the other character traits and banter is kind of funny to hear in English since I don't speak Japanese and only know a couple words and such from watching Anime. I don't know if the translations would do a good enough job at telling us the meaning of what the character said unless you are familiar with the language. I know that sometimes Japanese words used a certain way can have a different meaning that doesn't really translate well to English. I've seen Manga and Anime have to put up footnotes to explain what the character meant or why a certain word was supposed to be funny to the characters.

I'd say the biggest problem is how linear it is and how little freedom there is to explore. Dead ends usually always hide a treasure chest and every dungeon has 1 secret area you can get to and get rare mirages. Other than that you really don't get freedom to go anywhere. Towns have no shops(the shop is back in your home base area that you can take portals to), you can't go inside houses, you don't use the inn, there's a limited number of people to talk to in the world, and most towns are only 1 or 2 screens and that's it. Disappointed in that aspect for sure. It's pretty accessable for most people too because there's no death penalty. You don't lose exp, don't lose gil. You are tossed back to the home town and your life refilled. Though you do have to climb your way back to where you were in the dungeon. The only way to get a Game Over is when you die in a threshold which are usually boss battles.

Yeah, there's definitely a bit of that in manga/anime. You usually see it with cultural references (e.g. Japanese folklore has thousands of demons), wordplay (puns, etc.), or cultural idioms. I guess it's probably just about as bad when viewing American content, but one nice thing is that our country is so young in comparison that we don't have a lot of that ancient history to pull stuff from (like the demon folklore and such). Mangastream, a web-based scanlation group, usually posts some good blog entries about this sort of thing. If you're interested in Japanese language quirks, they're a good read. I think their last one that I saw was just an article on pronouns, how they're used in the certain manga by the different characters, and what that means.

Hm... so, it's really the new age Mystic Quest? 😛 Although, if that's the case, as long as it has awesome battle music like Mystic Quest, I'm good! All joking aside, I think the biggest issue with what you're describing is that this game is one of the closest things we've gotten to an old school Final Fantasy game (barring handheld entries), but it really needs those other steps to fill that hole. Maybe playing this and Final Fantasy XV together can help a bit. XV seems to have the story that we want where WoFF has the gameplay.

I'm playing this game now. Only put in about an hour and still very early in the game. So far it's pretty fun. I was looking for a casual/monster collector type game so this was right up my ally.

Cool I'm about half way through the chapters and level 35ish right now. It's pretty easy to be overleveled for the story based fights where you can just auto attack through it if you spend any amount of time leveling. I just acquired Cerberus not long ago which is an XL mirage. XL mirages have to be summoned and it costs you 24AP to use them. They are very cool though with strong attacks. There's also some champions you can get to summon later on which are basically main characters from previous FF games.

Anyone who is a fan of Xenogears, there is a mirage in the game modeled after Weltall you can get in the post game(after the main story). There's some extra dungeons to explore after the main game with some very powerful mirages, one of them is called XG. I haven't gotten to him yet but people have told me that they were level 70 when they fought him and they lost lol and had to be level 80+ to stand a chance. There's also a bunch of special mirages tied to the Coliseum. For completionists there's a lot to collect.

Small tip. Do all the intervention quests from the girl who forgot her name before you beat the final boss for the true ending after chapter 21. If you do not do them all before this then you cannot access the extra 4 dungeons and will have to fight the final boss again to unlock them.

Just to make sure I'm reading it right, you are saying do all intervention quests before beating final boss so that you can unlock the 4 bonus dungeons. Right?

You meant to type "don't do" right?

So I've put in maybe about 6-7 hours now, middle of chapter 6 I think and have about a 15 or so mirages captured. Most of the game features have unlocked now and now it's just a matter of going through the story and doing all side quests/collecting. I'm normally a completionist (or as close to one as I can be), so I have plenty ahead for me to do.

I do wish that the menu navigation was a bit quicker. I feel like moving the cursor around, and going into each sub-menu screen takes too long. I want it to be snappy and quick. That's about the only gripe with the UI system so far. The other issue is the annoying brother dialogue lol.

Correct I'll have to edit that. If you do not complete the interventions after you get the credits and reload your save, prior to taking on the final boss of the story, you cannot access dungeon EX1-4 or have access to any of the unique mirages inside them including XG. You would have to do the interventions and fight the boss again.

Basically chapter 21 ends the game but there is post-script story that is available after you see the credits roll. There, you can go back and complete the intervention quests you didn't do and you get access to a couple new areas in certain regions like a special ice region with higher level mirages that give more xp (60k-100k). Once you do all the interventions and then finish the final boss (and see the true ending)you can explore the new dungeons. I will say that in dungeon EX4 at the save point before the boss you can grind levels there easily. The mirages you face will give 200k XP per battle and with Thunder or Ice based AOE spells on a good magic stack, you can OHKO them. So battle, collect xp, touch save crystal to load AP back, repeat...profit!

Good to know thanks!

Did they ever offer co-op for this? I picked up the game case at gamestop last night and it stated single player but I read that co-op was promised?

No, there's trading of mirages and online battling though. I never heard about any co-op.

There seems to be a problem with the game on the new PS4 Pro. People are claiming the game looks pixelated and not as sharp on the Pro in 4k. I believe it's because the game was not built for the pro and the flaws in the models and textures are more apparent when the system scales everything to 4k than just letting your TV do it. That's just my guess, I haven't finished restoring my backup to my Pro yet to try it and see if it looks like that for me.

edit: if you play the game using v1.0 without updating it (can't use online features) the game looks fine on the Pro according to my reading.

When i first loaded up infamous Second Son on the pro I did so without updating the game and it was a hot mess. All sorts of crazy florescent colors, could hardly see anything at all. Once I did the update though it worked fine. I haven't tried all my other games yet to see if there is an issue or not. The transfer will take 10 hours so I'm not going to be playing until tomorrow after work.

So with world of final fantasy on the pro in 1080p the game uses downsampling from 4K which looks horrible. It's all pixelated and characters don't look smooth. At 4K it is clear but there is a lot more blur on the picture. Lots of textures just look smudged. Installing the game off the disc and not letting it update will clear this right up. The game needs an update for the pro.

Good to know. I'm tempted to pick this game up but I purchased FF15 which releases at the end of the month so I'm thinking two FF games in one month might be a mistake.

Don't say that! I want it to be good. The last FF game I truly enjoyed was 7. I liked FF13. Though I thought gameplay was solid I was very disappointed with the visuals and world. They could have done much more with that title and the point A to Point B pathways killed me a little inside. FF15 looks to be going back to the more open world which I enjoy. Not to mention it looks fantastic.

But I may pick up this title anyway. If anything my daughter might enjoy it as her first romp into an JRPG.
