Epic encrypted the config files? Wow, that's disgusting. REALLY disgusting.

How do we know that it was Epic that locked down the configuration files? People Can Fly was a major developer on Bulletstorm and could have made said decision.

This was quite a big uproar over it when the game came out and Epic went to say something like we want the experience to be what the developer intended.

It's pretty funny how all Epic can do is make fancy tech demos and then push out console ports that look no different than 2007 games.

Meanwhile, Russian developers like 4A Games, who developed Metro 2033, already put things like Subsurface Scattering and DX11 depth of field into their game. Really, it's funny how all these big names developers just release marketing videos while the smaller developers actually release games that have these effects.

I'm thinking that Stalker 2 will have all these effects before any game from Epic does.

That's [peachy keen]. You're [peachy keen].

Like in all fields, creating games requires specialization. Companies like Epic, id and Crytek (at least before Crysis 2) specialize in creating technology, particularly graphics technology. It's well known that their games are essentially tech demos designed to help them sell their engines. I don't know why stupid people like you hate on them for it - think of all of the awesome games we wouldn't have if it weren't for the Unreal engines.

after how they treated the community with UT3, I'm staying the hell away.

They couldn't even give the PC community a decent non-console interface, not to mention even getting the FOV for aspect ratio right. 16:10 and 16:9 display less than 4:3.

I can't believe how user friendly that editor is, almost like paint. I had always imagined game development to be hardcore coding-intensive.

Any kind of serious game development is hardcore coding intensive. Those pretty editors only give you things like maps. You still have to write code to determine how it all behaves.

We should be happy that Epic is throwing crumbs at us? Rubbish console ports that run poorly and look as good as a game made 4 years ago?

The fact is quality games made using the engines from "specialized" companies are generally few and far in between on the PC; and many of them are rubbish with the exception of Crysis, Bulletstorm and maybe a GoW.

Looks awesome, but all lies. That sure as hell isn't going to run on the Xbox 360 or PS3. It'll have to be tuned down, or delayed for the next gen consoles. :(

Yes, you are. Nice job throwing a tantrum though.

Maybe you should tell Epic that the entire Gears of War trilogy is just a tech demo and see how they respond.

Gears of War is really bad and unfortunately not even impressive enough to use as a tech demo =/

With Rage supposed to be coming out at the end of 2011, Unreal is going to have to do something to make sure their engine stays in the market.

I have to admit, I am impressed with the video. I just hope future games look as good as the video makes them look.

Epic has usurped ID as the game engine technology leader a long time ago. I would be extremely surprised if the Rage engine gets used more than the next Unreal engine.

Engines are nice, but game play is what's most important. It won't matter how good the games look if they are consolized. UT3 is a great example of how a crappy, buggy, half-finished game can be released on a great graphics engine.

In popularity. Epic stopped bringing world class engines and instead consolized their market. Doing so gave us a very shitty Unreal Tournament and a bunch of console games. Now Id and Crytek are doing the same. However, both Id and Crytek have more impressive offerings than Epic as far as actual 'technology' goes.

I don't think Id Software will sell more engines based on Rage than Epic will, however, I expect Rage to be technologically more impressive than a Gears of War sequel.

Epic dominates because they release the same Tools to the Public(minus a few things) that they use for making full Games. This has made them very popular amongst Modders and others, creating a huge Talent Pool Game Producers can draw upon.

Many engine developers have been doing this for a long time, granted even back a ways, Epic always had a good offering. However, they dominate because they threw all their chips in on consoles.

I disagree. They dominated before going to Consoles, for the reasons I sited. Epic was the first to really support the Modding Community with the Tools necessary for Modding. There were Tools available for other Engines, but iD and others didn't Provide or Support them.

Id didn't support? Id open sourced older engines long before any other developer. They wrote Worldcraft, QuakeC and many, many engine revisions. On top of that, John Carmack used to host developer conferences training people on how to develop at QuakeCon and other large events.

Epic created a pretty unified platform, they did a good job on it, but they are where they are because console developers wanted a platform to build "PC-esque games" (which is 90% of what people play on xbox360 / PS3 these days) and Epic delivered.

The first game I ever modded was Unreal. I made some crappy maps

Is the website not rendering properly for anyone else?

EDIT: Looks like it renders properly, but I have no idea where to find this videos. Ctrl-F for "unreal" gives me nothing.
