this, ladies and gentlemen, is how NOT to wear a sports coat.

Not really, the position was so simplified at that point that any grandmaster or master level player could identify the blunder.

If Anand blocked check with his bishop instead of his knight, Carlsen would have been forced to sacrifice his new queen to prevent checkmate, but would have captured Anand's knight in return. It's a simple line. Look up the game on youtube, there will be explanations there.

The computer just sort of rubber stamps it in this case.

Here's the board position at that point.

Thanks.

I think I'll have to watch the match, see how much time he took, and his reaction. How does someone that good make a mistake like that. It's kind of crazy.

It was an unusually bad blunder, but it happens. One factor was probably time, Anand took 55 minutes to make one of his moves, so I'm sure he was tired from that and he was also feeling pressure because he had to make his next ten moves in 10 minutes.

The disappointing thing is that he did have a good attack going. Carlsen was defending well, but it was probably the most lively game Anand has played to this point.

oh lol! Did i just hear Vishy deliver a completely sarcastic answer to that dumb press woman?

"You spent also a lot of time in this position. Did you try really to calculate all these possible complications, all these variations to the end somehow? Was this possible?"

"No I was thinking what to eat tonight."

Poor Vishy, I don't think he's usually that snippy, but he's gotta be really frustrated. After he lost the sixth game a reporter asked him how he was going to try to recover and he said he was just going to do his best. Another reporter asked him to expand on that, and explain how he was going to change his approach, and Vishy just said something like 'I don't know why you don't understand English, I said I'm going to do my best!'

^ Some of the earlier draws took ~6 hours!

Anyone else thinks Carlsen going to play for a draw today?

Sleeves are too long, the second button is a personal preference, and it could be a little bit longer.

What else is wrong with it?

NO! NO! NO! never ever button the bottom button, the jacket is designed and cut around not having it closed, you can see the fabric bunching up on his right and that's mostly because he closed it and the jacket can't move "naturally" and drape like it's supposed to. It's rule number one of wearing a suit jacket/blazer/sports coat:

sometimes (three button jacket).
always.
never.

the sleeves are a big no no as well, it has functional buttonholes as far as I can tell which is probably why they haven't fixed it (you'll need to fix most of it at the shoulders which is "expensive").

it also looks too roomy in the chest, honestly he looks like a schoolboy in his uniform rather than a man in his sports coat.

I much prefer listening to Polgar and Ramesh rather than the bickering kids.

White in full control at the moment.

You most certainly can button both (two) buttons on a double breasted jacket.

Very few men today can pull off double breasted today.

Has the game finished yet? I can't watch at work 🙁

I left at about 8:40 EST, Anand looked like he was going to play as aggressively as possible for a win.

double breasted is an entirely different beast all together with its own rules. Yes you can button the bottom button but with a modern double breasted you generally only button the middle and the anchor (most modern suit are thankfully 6x2), it really depends on the suit in question. the most important double breasted rule is to never unbutton it unless you're taking it off.

I think many men can pull off a double breasted but most just don't know how to wear it. It's less versatile than a single breasted suit so in today's less formal world it's not really any surprise it has fallen a bit out of favor.

double breasted should only be worn by taller, more fit men.

Well said!

Congrats to Carlsen, I believe he ties Kasparov as the youngest world champion. And hats off to Anand who is simply a superb player. Would not be surprised to see him back here.

After doing some reading, it seems like a few titles passed down without matches that would have given a lot of excitement and closure for the lineage of World Champion.

Fischer - Karpov... didn't happen.

Karpov - Kasparov - Thankfully did happen, apparently some great matches there.

Kasparov - Carlsen -Kasparov retired and only played him in one blitz game at age 13 where he was simply making sure he didn't lose.

Dumb question, but what size pieces and board/squares do they typically use in a championship match like this?

(I'm thinking of buying a new board and set for myself.)
