"World Champions"

Thinking about the LA Lakers and basketball in general, why are the champions considered "World Champions", it's not as if they play many/any foreign teams, admittedly a US team would win most times, but still, why can't you guys be happy with National Champions, since no one seems to play a lot of your sports everywhere else? (I know, there are exceptions in baseball and stuff).

Yeah I have 'dealt with it', just intrigues me that's all, and how Americans tend to be so aggressive at times...

We are aggressive because we name our championships as "World"??

But what's the point of it being the World Series if no one else gets to play.?

Well since the best players come here to play from all over the world, there really wouldn't be any point to play such immensely inferior teams. It would be like the MLB team playing its minor league teams.

That's just the way it is. Deal with it.

No, that's why I think some Americans can be too aggressive. Wy couldn't you just reply civilly?

What sports do other countries have and what do they call their championships??

What's the Cricket champion(ship) called?

Well, I don't follow cricket. But anything with the 'World' tag in football is truely international e.g. Rugby and football World Cup's. They involve everyone.

Because there're many people in the sports business who measure/associate the greatness of a nation with its achievement/competence in sports. Crazy, I think, but that's just how it is, and I think it(the mentality of these people) has produced very good entertainment for me. I know what these games mean to me, and they're just games, so I'm not bothered by it... Self-gradizing is not limited to the people in the sports business, but they get the attention of the media few of us receive.

Most tourny's that I know of that involve the word "World" do in fact involve multiple nations (not just the US and the possibility of a Canadian team or two). World Cup involves over 200 nations for soccer (football for the rest of the world of course). Rugby has a similar championship, but I am drawing a blank on the name.

It's just the Rugby World Cup, you have said what I am trying to say at least.

they should change all the "World XXXX Champion" stuff to "Universal XXXX Champion" or "Inter-Galactic XXXX Champion" 😛

I thought each year the nba champions play the Euro champion in the mcdonalds classic or something.

Anycase, I have alot more respect for World Cup champions because they are truly "world champions". Its all about marketing over here tho, and as soon as some nba teams lose the mcdonalds tourney, which they will because they never take it very seriously, then it will remain this way.

The USA Team just might lose a game (or more) in this summers World Championships. A good deal of the 'bigger' NBA stars are NOT playing (because thier not interested).
