world AIDS day - 2005.12.01

Every year, the first of December is remembered as World AIDS day.

It's not a day of celebration. It's a day of rememberance.

Remember that there are people around us living with HIV
Remember that there are people around us who need our support
Remember that there are people around us who have hopes and wishes

People with HIV need our support, and it's up to us to act on that.
When we as society cannot accept them, they lose faith in themselves.
And when they lose faith in themselves, they lose everything.

HIV cannot be spread by sharing food and drink
HIV cannot be spread by hugging each other
HIV cannot be spread by sharing the joys of life
And most importantly, HIV cannot be spread by being a supportive friend

Edit: more poll options

This time of the year, that's not uncommon judasmachine 🙁

What about victims of rape? unborn children with infected mothers? blood transfusion going wrong? Medical personel ? :frown:

Exactly why I said mostly avoidable. People who were infected through no fault of their own garner sympathy from me...the rest of them are SOL.

Those are all extremely rare cases.

Rape victims and children, yes, they deserve special attention and should be first in line for treatment. Perhaps the AIDS day should be changed to "Victims of people with AIDS Day."

As far a blood transfusion. It's been over 10 years since someone has last aquired AIDS through that method, atleast in the United States.

But 99% of the people with the disease got it from their own careless lifestyle.

Yeah I know. I just cringe everytime I hear that he's in the hospital. The nature of our relationship (friend of a friend), I only know about it after the fact, so that usually means he's gotten better.

So someone who crapped out doing the same thing we all did in high school garners no sympathy from you? Were you honestly a virgin till your wedding night, and did you both get tested before hand? Yes sex is preventable, but no one really tries to prevent it.

You're missing something.

It's okay to have sex. Have it. Have it a lot, all the time. But use protection! These people are not only sleeping around, but they're not using protection. That's filth (sleeping around) coupled with stupidity (no protection).

That's sort of a ironic part of it all. They're sleeping around, knowing the risks, and on top of that, they won't spend one dollar to save their life from a deadly disease!

And most respectable people did not have sex in high school. I did not and 90% my friends did not, even though we were the good looking, popular, and smart kids.

Yes, I had sex in high school...the question you should be asking is, did I have unprotected sex. No, I did not have unprotected sex. Yes, both my wife and I were tested before we got married. Before the rubbers came off we both went to get tested.

I feel bad for those people that try to be responsible while still keeping a "healthy sex life", while their partner(s) aren't being honest - such as one guy I know, who now has HIV, because he had sex with a man (using a condom)... not knowing that the man was HIV+, nor that the man was trying to infect him.

To some people, HIV/AIDS can be avoided, and they avoid it well
To some people, HIV/AIDS can be avoided, but they choose not to
To some people, HIV/AIDS can be avoided, if only they have enough information on how to
To others, HIV/AIDS was not avoidable, due to various reasons not in their control

Looking at some parts of the world, most people only know that HIV/AIDS are deadly, extremely contagious (which is misleading but it happened), and should be avoided like a plague. Most people never get enough information as to what can cause AIDS, how to get more information on it, or how to avoid it. This is especially true in third world countries.

Another thing - most "stop AIDS" activities revolve around "safe sex by the use of condoms".
How many of those activities tell people to have themselves tested for HIV? Or how many tell people how they can get support if they got AIDS? Or how many of those offer advices to be a supporter for others with AIDS?

Anyways, We're not here to condemn people who got AIDS, be it intentionally or not.
We're here to help people and let them know that if they need help, there will be a few of us who will offer them support.

Take this day not to fight over who did wrong or why someone deserves to get AIDS, or argue over why someone got AIDS although s/he didn't deserve it. Make this a day we realize that AIDS is around us, and we need to educate ourselves on it before we educate or 'preach' to others.

Most importantly, make it a day we pull ourselves together and support each other fighting it.

Ummm seriously, this is a stupid "day". What the hell is the point of wearing a ribbon one day? Does that show that you remember people with aids and want to feel bad for them for 1 day?

It just is pointless and a waste. I don't need a damn ribbon to remind me people are living with aids, I pretty much an aware of it 365 days a year, with or without a stupid ribbon attached to my clothes.
