Workstation upgrades

Hey everyone,

Have you had any luck upgrading workstations using 3rd party peripherals? I seem to have trouble upgrading a Compaq AP400 Professional workstation.

Currently, there is a SCSI Yamaha CD burner and a Buslink DVD 12x IDE drive, which is set to master. Windows Me keeps giving this error that it does not have enough permissions to access the drive when using audio CDs. However, it will still play it at times.

Are workstations in general this problematic? I suggested to my grandpa that workstations are not geared for average multimedia desktop use since they use propietary parts. Can I get a confirmation on this? Thanks..

The Compaq AP series is called a "workstation" but it is nothing more than their Intel based non-server systems that support dual processors and SCSI. They commonly used proprietary parts such as the SCSI controller and video being on the same card, etc. Later flavors used basically standard parts except for the proprietary motherboard. Your problems sounds like an OS problem to me, however. The term workstation usually refers to non-Intel/AMD processor systems. (Alpha, Sparc, etc.)
