Alright, after lots of advice i've narrowed myself down to 2 potential dual processing workstations (AMD vs. Intel of course). My other thread was cluttered so i'd figured i'd start a fresh thread.

INTEL:
(1) Thermaltake Xaser V, Full-Tower, 420PSU - Retail: $189
(1) Supermicro X5DA8 E7505 Dual Xeon E-ATX MB - Retail: $480
(2) Intel Xeon 3.06Ghz, 533MHz FSB, 512K Cache, HT - Retail: $335 each
(2) Corsair 1GB DDR266 CAS2.5 ECC RAM - Retail: $330 each
(1) PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX1000, 128MB, Dual DV, 8X AGP - Retail: $760
(1) Promise PCI to SATA Controller Card "SATA150 TX4" - Retail: $70
(2) WD 200GB 7200RPM SATA HD - OEM: $131 each
(1) Sony 8X DVD+/-RW Drive DWU18A - OEM: $80
(1) Sony CRX230E-B2 CD-RW Drive - OEM: $27

Total: $3067 + Shipping

Pros: Official Quadro FX1000 graphics card

AMD:
(1) Thermaltake Xaser V, Full-Tower, 420PSU - Retail: $189
(1) TYAN Thunder K8W, AMD-8000, Socket 940 - Retail: $436
(2) AMD Opteron Model 246, 1MB L2 Cache, 64bit - Retail: $461 each
(2) Corsair 1GB Kit, DDR400 XMS3200 ECC Registered - Retail: $380 each
(1) Leadtek NVIDIA FX5900XT, 128DDR, 256-bit, 8x agp - Retail: $186
(1) Promise PCI to SATA Controller Card "SATA150 TX4" - Retail: $70
(2) WD 200GB 7200RPM SATA HD - OEM: $131 each
(1) Sony 8X DVD+/-RW Drive DWU18A - OEM: $80
(1) Sony CRX230E-B2 CD-RW Drive - OEM: $27

Total: $2987

Pros: Better performance out of opterons
Con: downgrade on video card. will the modded 5900xt perform much the same as the quadro?

-------------
Will the chassis fit the TYAN board? It says the form factor is SSI EEB V3.0 so i honestly have no idea what cases those are. I'm just familiar with the general atw, eatx, matx.

Thanks guys

PS. I don't think i'm going to wait to see what intel is releasing with the new xeons at the end of the month as i believe the MB and CPU combo will be outrageously priced.

and what will you be using it for?

it was suggested previously that the 5900xt's firmware can be changed to operate as a quadro

I'll be using this workstation for CAD (CATIA mainly) and video editing with ephasis on CAD.
