I need to build 3 engineering workstations for my business. we need to work with designs in real time and in 3D. so this is what i'm looking at so far. suggestions are appreciated,

cpu quad opterons 852 2.6ghz
mb tyan thunder k8qs pro
ram 32GB brand?
video card?
power supply?
hd seagate scsi 73gb 15,000rpm for OS
hd 3 seagate cheetah 10k.7 300gb for file storage
floppy teac 1.44
dvd combo drive plextor 716sa
case?

there is no budget, what it costs is what it cost.
also these 3 need to be networked any suggestions on what would be best for that?

What program(s) are you running and what do they use in a computer? Do you really need quad opterons and 32gb of memory (is this even possible?).

When do you need them? The Thunder K8QS is quite esoteric. And you'd be limited to onboard video. The K8WE would allow for dual PCIe workstation cards, and with Italy Opterons you could still have quad CPU.

For lots of CPU for final animations, a render farm would be better.

For hardcore 3DS max, Maya, and Renderman workstation look at my rig.

Just as an FYI Seagate 10k.7s are the dogs of the 10K scsi world they are actualy slower than the 10k.6 so I'd suggest some other brand of 10k scsi drive, depending on what your doing the setup you listed seems overkill, you might want to look into just some dual processor workstations w/ higher speed CPU's instead of a quad setup, but that depends on what you are going to be running.

well it is going to be used for automotive race engineering. simulation of components in real time. can't say what application as it is coming from an auto manufacturer. wont need the system for 3 months when the engineers start. i think i might have to hire someone to take care of this for me as i'm not that famaliar with this equipment. i'm really going by what 1 of the engineers told me he uses now.

Hehehe. I signed yet another NDA not too long ago.

Lets just say I got 4 sample Egypt 880s right now waiting. It won't be useful for high-end workstation cards though. Single plane cards only!

Well, first of all, for real time 3D you definately need a FireGL, Quadro, Wildcat card. None of which will work with the board you initially posted.

Can you ask questions about the hardware requirements from the manufacturer?

yes i will ask questions. some of the software we will use comes from MSC Software called Adams. their website dosent give a recommendation on system specs. going to have to call them on monday. not sure if i should try to build these or buy something prebuilt to my specs. i'd rather do it my self so i know what im getting. just found this
http://www.memagazine.org/supparch/medesign/softex/softex.html (powertrain simulator) says 320mb ram recommened.

Which version of ADAMS? 11? 12? 2k3? 2k5?

You need OpenGL 1.2 and a lot of CPU, and probably not more than 2GB of ram. 4GB would be perfectly overkill.

Like this:

K8WE
Dual 252s
4GB
Quadro 4400

Drool.......

It's really fun that they mention: "Leading the pack is the intel Xeon processor......." as the text for an Opteron system :D

Ahh it's costumized

i'm guessing adams automotive performance but just going by notes i jotted down in a meeting from friday. if that 's what it will take then i might give that a try. do you know of any good 36" to 42" monitors? i like hitachi but not sure if they make anything that size for a pc.

36" monitor? Wow...

I have no idea about something computer worthy that size, but you could get a Barco projector and a 90" Stewart filmscreen...

Take a look at this

Ha! Thanks for pointing that out biostud. Yes, the problem with custom building is keeping your ad copy up to date! :)

ribbon, thanks for the link, it caught my eye! Those kind of workstations are right up our alley, feel free to request a quote from us, saleen!
