Friend works for a company that has 20 employees including the boss & his secretary.

The bosses boss at corporate says he needs to cut two employees to save 70-75k in operating expenses as part of a restructuring plan. Boss calls a meeting and tells the 18 employees he can either cut 5hours a week or he has to fire two of them. All the employees agree to an hourly cut of 5 hours a week.

Would you have agreed to it?

1/9 chance of getting canned vs -1/8 pay.

umm, i'd go with the chance of getting canned.

a more realistic scenario would be, to fire 2 people, or decrease everyones pay a bit. this happened at my friends place. everyone chose to lower their pay rather than let 2 go.

I would rather take chances of being fired then taking pay cut. Yea, i know it's selfish act but you got to look out for what is best for you as no on else will.

Nope, they'll fire folks anyway and you'll end up working the full number of hours, just not getting paid for five of them. Also, you'd permanently devalue your position.

..what about everybody works one extra day twice a month for no pay and nobody gets fired or looses wage.

My company is forcing everybody to take 2 weeks unpaid vacation to save cash in Q1 and Q2. If economy stays bad, Q3 and Q4 maybe also. 7.6% of pay (if all year) plus removal of the 5% match. And they are still laying off people..

How did you get 1/9 chance of getting canned from that?

2 of the 18 have to go....so 1/9. I guess you would want to take a reduction in hours as you would likely be going.
