If you really wanted to get picky look at MLK's relationship with his wife and ask if you should celebrate that as well.

Nitemare I wholeheartedly agree with your first point but I fail to see how MLK's relations with his wife or other women should in any way detract from his work in civil rights. MLK was a MAN. He was not perfect. However, he did something which took extreme courage at the time and lost his life for it. With that in mind I could not care less about the man's personal life.

I think that was the point. It doesn't matter.

Since my workplace decided to put up a huge picture of MLK because his day is Monday, I wonder if I make a big enough stink, they'll put up a picture of Christopher Columbus in October to honor his day, since I am Italian. Reverse political correctness, seems if it's good for one, it should be good for all.

Columbus was Genovese, and was not sailing under the Italian flag. Why do people try to make him out to be an Italian hero?

Stick to Amerigo Vespucci. He was Italian, and the continent was named for him anyway.

You might want to read over your history. "Italy" as a country did not exist until the mid 1800s when all the Italian states were unified. Genoa, Columbus' home land was one of these states. I'm Italian, not from Genoa but I still consider Columbus a national hero. As for Vespucci, he was from Firenze.
You're probably right about Vespucci.

I'm Italian, too. I don't need to manufacture heroes, though. That was my point.

Its not about manufacturing heros...its about being proud of your own heritage and your countrymen's impact on the world. I'm proud of my country and it's acheivements (Colombus, Fermi, Da Vinci etc...). Blacks likewise should be proud of MLK. Nothing wrong with that. If OP's workplace can display a picture of MLK, then why not Colombus?

Columbus may not have been the first but he was the most influential. Lief Ericson (sp?) is known to have discovered it before Columbus, but he didn't do much with his discovery. I beleive only Iceland or the Vikings (not sure of the history from this time period) knew about it. Colombus's discovery echoed throughout the entire world, or at the very least Europe. It like the inventor of the telephone, everyone knows it as Bell, but there was really another guy who invented it first, but Bell beat him the patent office.

You failed history, right? Columbus' actions and ideas for a new trade route were so revolutionary, he was considered mad by more than a few people for having them. Most thought he was sailing away to certain death.

I'm sorry, I fail to see how that benefits mankind.

If you fail to see how the discovery of the New World benefited Europeans, you need to go back to grade school history and get a refresher.

Exactly. A discovery doesn't mean jack sh!t if you don't do anything with it, and it is quickly forgotten.

Elisha Grey.

This thread is ridiculous, as are most people's perceptions about the history of race and nations. Throughout history, every race and nation on earth has been horribly violent, committing atrocious acts of slavery and genocide. Now that, for the first time is all human history, we have an opportunity to stop all that, some people just won't let go of all the old hatreds.
Personally, my hat is off to both Columbus and King. Both made very important contributions to all of humanity.

Let go.

Monetary benefit != benefiting mankind, @sshat.

Wow, some of you people need to stop taking PC pills. And read some history.

Off-Topic: I've never really understood how a person can have pride in something s/he had no hand in. For example, I am part Chinese, and I don't really give a rat's a$$ that "my" people had an advanced civilization when most of yours were wearing animal skins and screwing their sisters. I had nothing to do my ancestors' accomplishments, which would have happened whether or not I ever existed.

I never meant this as a Columbus vs. MLK thread, I just used that as an example. I was just shocked that my Fortune 500 (top 5) company did this, seeing as how there is no huge picture of George Washington on his birthday/holiday, or Abe Lincoln, etc. Like I said before, if it's done for one, it should be done for all. Had the roles been reversed, and there was a picture of Washington/Lincoln/Columbus, and not of MLK, you know damn well there would be some outcries of racism or discrimination.

The founding of the first Constitutional Republic? The founding of the first nation to value individual rights? The founding of the first non-religion based government?

And if you think money and economic growth is not of any value to mankind, you need to stop listening to the atruistic BS your teachers are telling you.

Why don't you read the thread instead of reveling in your ignorant self righteous disgust?
