In an effort of self improvement I have decided to hit the gym.

Right now I am running 2.5 miles at 5am and
2.5 miles at 4pm. And the normal stuff, eating healthy and getting regular sleep.

I want to lose weight, period. Is what I am doing fine? Or should I switch it up?
I just started this week, I already feel good, self esteem wise for getting up and doing this, but I want to make sure I am using my time wisely.....

I think nobody's responding since we have a sticky written by your's truly at the very top of this forum addressing this exact topic :) Look at that and then post any questions you have left in this thread.

1. Clean up your diet.
2. Add a good strength training routine (e.g. Starting Strength)
3. Do cardio on alternate days

See the sticky at the top of the forum for more details.

Also, intense cardio (interval training, tabatas, supersets) will recompose your body much more quickly than steady state cardio. And strength training is a definite must unless you want to burn up your muscles.

If you don't mind being weak and just want to be skinny, what you're doing is fine. Eat fewer calories than you burn.

This is very important. Lifting heavy weights for low reps (i.e. lift the most you can lift for 6 reps) rather than light weights for high reps will do a better job promoting fat loss rather that fat-and-muscle loss. Also, if running is your only exercise, your leg muscles will get stronger as your upper body gets weaker. Be sure to not neglect your upper body.

ok so basically to maintain my muscles and lose the fat i need to do cardio( the running that i do now) and then also life weights that i can barely move but do it only a few times, heavy weights and low reps right?
I'm 26 and 196lbs BTW

look at Starting strength program. 3 sets of 5 reps with weight that increases each workout.

As per the sticky, look at Starting Strength/Stronglifts 5x5, then on your off days do 30+min HIIT intervals (can be running, bike, treadmill, elliptical etc) or tabatas etc. If you commit and do this 5 days a week (3 lifting, 2 HIIT with 2 full rest days) you will see results fast.
