Hi all,

Newbie question...

What breathing pattern do you follow while lifting weights ? say like dumbells etc. and say while doing pushups? When do you exhale and when to inhale...

Any good links? ... I don't plan to become a Arnold Sch.. overnight. just plan to have a few arm bumps...

Always exhale when doing the "hard" part, and inhale doing the "easy" part. For example, on bench press, you exhale when pushing up, and inhale when lowering the weight down. On pullups, you exhale pulling yourself up, and inhale letting yourself down. On curls, you exhale lifting the weight up, and inhale letting it back down. And so on, and so forth.
 
Umm.... when doing pushups I just take a deep breath and start churnin' em out until I need another breath. I do pushups too quickly to inhale/exhale with every one, I'd hyperventilate or whatever...

Those are a few to get you started. They do not consist of muscle bound steroid freaks also.
 
When you work out you will pretty much do the inhaling/exhaling automatically when you need to. Its something you just will do right for the most part. I know when ever I am bench pressing I am exhaling while I am pushing it up and inhaling on the way down.
 
Also if you really start to get into it. Remember that having a nice body to show off the results of your workout you must diet properly. The ratio is probably along the lines of 75 percent diet to 25 percent the workout.

Yeah, but u see I tend to inhale when I lift the dumbells and exhale when I lower them ... 😱

And I was reading some articles saying that doing so (i.e. inhaling while exerting) can lead the the blood-vessels, face muscles etc to get over-exerted.

While it doesn't seem to be a bad idea to exert the vessels (finally, isn't it making the vessels bigger internally - one of the intentions of workout , so long as one doesn't over-do it) ? 😕

Methinks it's best to exhale (blow out or count the number of the rep)...
ifyou're doing your reps too fast to breathe deeply with each rep... you're going too fast!
People who follow High Intensity Training method (more reps, less sets, lower weight, and SLOW reps) definitely have to breathe a few times sometimes to get through the rep. Main point is to breathe...

IMHO, exhaling on the rep helps you push yourself further... may just be psychological though. 😉
 
I wouldnt worry about any of that stuff over exerting. That is mainly for the 400 lbs dumbell lifters me thinks 😛

Again the stuff should come natural when you are doing the motion.
 
It's always very important to keep good form, and breathing is a very crucial part of keeping form. Those websites have plenty of good information, I'd trust 'em.
 
I've always heard you should exhale when you're exerting yourself. Puts the onus of exerting force on the muscle instead of your body cavity, or something like that. Just make sure not to hold your breath and exert too hard. Don't want to have to change your shorts. As for LittleWolf's comment about the blood vessels, I don't think you want to do that. The bigger the blood vessels are, the less surface area there is for cells to get oxygen.
